I like Hoffman, but I think it’s time for the Blue Jays to seriously consider taking him out of the closer’s role. The strikeout numbers are elite, but as others have said, and as we’ve now seen repeatedly, he just doesn’t look built for the ninth inning. Too often, he seems to tighten up when the pressure is highest.

His track record with the Phillies as a middle reliever/setup man speaks for itself:

2023: 11.87 K/9, 2.57 FIP, 1.5 fWAR
2024: 12.08 K/9, 2.52 FIP, 2.0 fWAR

That’s a sharp contrast to his time as Toronto’s closer.

It feels pretty clear that the Jays would be better off moving him back into a role that fits him better and gives him the best chance to be effective.

I think Hoffman would be a great set up guy, but he’s 100% not closer material, JS has got to see this by now

His fielding has been awful this game and from what I've seen of him thus far. Unacceptable. Really annoying to watch this guy at the hot corner.
