Jays Mock Draft Update: Toronto Nabs a High Octane Lefty with the 8th Overall Pick

This draft cycle, we’re going to try something new. Every few weeks, I’ll be posting an article here listing out who the Jays would select based on their position on the consensus draft board. As the consensus board is updated, the players in those spots will be adjusted, and I’ll post another update.

This is not a proper mock draft. Rather, I’m hoping it’ll give readers an idea of the caliber of talent in each of the team’s first few picks. Additionally, it should help readers who want to dig into draft coverage a bit more get familiar with the class.

Here would be the Blue Jays' first two picks by consensus draft ranking as of 05.28.25.

First Round (8th Overall): Liam Doyle, LHP, Tennessee
Liam Doyle is one of the sharpest risers in the 2025 cycle. The Ole' Miss transfer has cemented himself as the Friday night starter for the defending national champions, and it's explosive stuff on the mound.

Doyle has an effortful delivery, but it seems to work well for him, and he's been in the zone plenty in 2025. His fastball is a unique, outlier shape, generating 20 inches of ride, and he's been cranking it up to 97 mph throughout SEC play. Doyle also uses a slider, and cutter, both of which are around average, and a changeup he's continuing to develop a feel for. A bugaboo for Doyle has been maintaining his velocity throughout starts. It tends to fall off with all pitches sharply after 45 pitches or so.

Doyle has posted consistently throughout a tough SEC slate. Prior to postseason play kicking off, he had managed a 3.04 ERA (2.49 FIP) with a 42.6% K% and 8.1% BB% in 83 innings of work. He’s not at the same level, but that’s Chase Burns/Hagen Smith levels of dominance. There’s some risk to the profile with an arsenal that needs development and an effortful delivery, but it’s top-tier arm talent.

Third Round (81st Overall): Nick Dumesnil, OF, Cal Baptist
Nick Dumesnil had an explosive 2024 for Cal Baptist, putting up a 1.142 OPS whilst swatting 19 home runs (41 extra base hits), walking 20 times, and striking out 35 times in 61 games. He carried this incandescent season into the Cape, where he put up an .866 OPS in 36 games.

Dumesnil is a tremendous athlete. It's serious bat speed from the right side with a simple swing that underpins a propensity to drive the ball to all fields.

Dumesnil has quality bat-to-ball skills, posting a contact rate north of 90%. While it's not top-of-the-scale power, his 106-mph EV90 provides plenty of impact. The biggest orange flag with Dumesnil is his swing decisions. His swing rate is north of 50% and his chase rate north of 30%, both astronomically high. He'll need to rein in the aggressive approach some to thrive in pro ball, but the athleticism, bat-to-ball skills, and contact quality are in place.
