Figured this deserved its own thread...

MLB is set to test robo umps during spring training.

They're now using the “Hawk-Eye” system, which is supposed to be better than Trackman, obviously trying to avoid what happened in the AFL last year. This might be the one thing Manfred got right this offseason (despite some pushback from the umpires union).

Yeah, I believe it does. This will be interesting to watch unfold, all the games aired tomorrow, too.

The Royals and Rangers game wasn't aired today, the bastards.

I really don't see what the issue is. You can still have the umpire back there for aesthetic and calls at home plate. I mean, other unionized labour has accepted technology to make their jobs EASIER. A commercial airline pilot in 2020 is not the same job as 1970 but you still need someone there in the cockpit to run everything. Imagine a manager arguing balls and strikes. The ump can give him his handheld device and tell him to yell at it. It's a win-win for everyone all around.

Hawkeye is used in cricket for low challanges. Its very accurate

As a test cricket fan I wouldn’t go bragging about the accuracy.

And the game and situation is completely different from baseball for reviews.

replay in cricket is almost always over an LBW appeal

(don't bother asking about this rule, it's almost impossible to nail it down unless one grasps a lot of nuances added in)

and that is simply predicting the trajectory of the ball as it SHOULD HAVE GONE if the batter didn't put his pad in front of the ball

it took awhile for all major countries to accept this and it does a decent job in predicting how the ball would have hit the wicket if unimpeded

but that's still not nearly perfect

and has nothing to do with baseball

Baseball is always too slow to make meaningful change. Instead we have this idiotic 3 batter minimum BS implemented. Manfred sucks so far.
