ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 http://sas.suplitodomedia.com/articles_images/GamblersPalace/BAL-ORIOLES-vs.-TOR-BLUE-JAYS.jpg Marcus Stroman (2-0, 4.22 ERA) VS Mike Wright (1-0, 7.20 ERA) Lineups TBA. Three things to know about this game • Sunday was the second time that Wright's start was postponed due to bad weather, but the O's elected to send a rested Chris Tillman to the mound for the next game. Wright made his first start of the season against the Red Sox last Tuesday, picking up a win despite allowing four runs over five innings. • Toronto won 11 of 19 games against Baltimore last season, scoring 118 runs (6.2 per game), the Blue Jays' highest run total against any opponent in 2015. They scored 15 runs to support Stroman the last time he faced the Orioles. • Camden Yards has not been kind to Jose Bautista, even though he's played there more than any ballpark other than Toronto's Rogers Centre and Pittsburgh's PNC Park, both places he called home. In 74 games at Camden Yards, the Blue Jays slugger has the lowest batting average there (.202) of any park in which he's had more than 100 at-bats. Bonus thing to know about this game: • Orioles Hangout suxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx My GDT record: 2-0 http://www.baseballpilgrimages.com/american/camdenyards.jpg

Don't you need like 650 at bats to get a reliable sample for batting average? And besides, isn't that like the worst metric you can use for a hitter? (Other than maybe hbp%)
Statman Verified Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 All I ask is to attack Chris Davis inside, up and in and breaking balls in the dirt. Please do not pitch him outside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Just looked at Stroman's k rate........wow. :( It's intentional. He wants to pitch deep into games. https://sports.vice.com/ca/article/how-discovering-a-sinker-changed-everything-for-marcus-stroman "I'm a completely different pitcher than I was for the first 23 and a half years of my life," says Stroman, who must have started pitching at a very tender age. "I was a four-seam guy who had trouble getting to the sixth, seventh, eighth innings. It would be five, six innings, high strikeouts, homers, fly-ball guy. And now I'm the complete opposite." Now he aims to pitch to contact, and the sinker, when it's working, often induces weak contact. Indeed, in the seven regular-season starts since he came back from knee surgery last September, he has averaged 12 ground-ball outs. In his first start this year, he had 15.

Yea just wait till he doesn't make it out of the 2nd inning in a upcoming game cause all those ground balls find holes.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 The sinkers are fine early in the count. When there is 2 strikes I'd like to see him elevate the 4 seam just to give the batter a different look and also change the eye level. Everything he throws now is down so I think the slider and change don't seem as effective. Could also just be his breaking ball isn't as good as it was in 2014.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Wright is garbage. Gotta take this game. SSS alert but Bau, Donaldson, and Edwin are a combined 10/83 career off of Ubaldo. For whatever reason he has their numbers. Get game 1
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Yea just wait till he doesn't make it out of the 2nd inning in a upcoming game cause all those ground balls find holes. Stroman is smart enough to change it up. I'm sure he'll adapt if he thinks the strikeout will happen. Ideally you pitch to contact until 2 strikes, and then try for the punch out.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 He should certainly add in the 4SF to finish guys off. I totally agree. It would change their thinking since it's a rising fastball to pair with his sinker. Baltimore is a K machine, so maybe Stro racks up more K's than usual tonight as well?

Next up is Houston/San Diego at 128.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Why not get GBs and K's? Use your 4 seam and strikeout pitches against FB hitters. Sinker against GB/contact hitters. There is no need to be one type of pitcher only.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 sweet, Pillar is batting 9th. Separate the lefties and now with his hot bat we can reach the top of the order sooner
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 (edited) He should certainly add in the 4SF to finish guys off. He used it more in 2014. I remember him touching 96 a few times. Fangraphs shows he is down 1.5 mph in avg FB V. With everything down with him, you would think using it upstairs would get him some K's. He must just be feeling comfortable and not wanting to use it.
