I have learned Greg Bird is going to miss all of the 2016 season. Going for shoulder surgery tomorrow #Yankees

Torn labrum too which is no joke. Any precedent for position players with this injury? It's certainly pretty bad for pitchers.

f*** me, Chris Iannetta I guess.

I feel like I took a jackhammer directly to my dick.

I'm not a superstitious person, but I have to blame your avatar in this case.

Yeah there's a bit of gloating over this but it really sucks. I mean whatever anyone may feel about you or the Yankees, the guy was a really exciting talent and this is a loss for baseball. Though they are completely different kinds of 1B, this reminds me of when injuries stole Nick Johnson's career.

Just consider that Greg Bird hit 11 homers and attained a 130+ wRC+ at 22 in his first taste of the bigs with a torn labrum. guys a stud

Was he playing last year injured? Or did he do something to it over the offseason?

I twittered Greg Bird to check.

The first link was an article asking if Greg Bird could hit 50 HR for the Yankees this year.

The second link answered the first link pretty unambiguously.

Ok, bad example. Look how Michael Pineda came back! Three short years later and he's a FIP ace.

He felt it early last spring, re-aggravated it this winter.

I don't think it really kills position player careers. Troy Glaus and Shawn Green have had them, google tells me. Both about a decade ago. Green was never as good after but he was also 30 at that point. Glaus returned to form

Ugh, this actually really sucks though. Outside of breaking your neck on a freak outfield collision, a torn labrum is basically the worst injury you can get in baseball. Hopefully it won't be as bad for him since he's not a pitcher.

He also doesn't play a position where throws are important. I could see something like this ruining a defense first shortstop's career. Bird might be o.k. though it definitely sets his career back dramatically.

Gary Sanchez, C, NYY.

Please Pm the next guy, thanks.

I actually wasn't aware that he debuted, sneaky pick. He'll be a s***** catcher but he might hit enough to make it up.

He'll be backing up McCann all season. Using a roster spot all year on a backup catcher is a pretty big commitment.
