Feel bad for him. He's pretty great when healthy and probably should have broke camp with the team. Complete clusterf*** of a season.

Would have sucked if he was stuck on the 40. I wonder if they gave him a little money for his rehab.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the club will be responsible for at least some kind of money. I remember years ago when the Jays signed a minor leaguer who had been with the Brewers who wound up needing TJS in ST. They voided his contract citing preexisting injuries and after a back and forth the Brewers were responsible for the cost of his surgery since it happened while he was with them (MLB wound up stating something along the lines of they believed he was injured while under contract with them so they must pay for the surgery) so it might be similar with him where he was on the 40 man has some kind of protections in that sense especially if their intent is to resign him anyway. If not I think they still have to cover the surgery and some rehab. I could be wrong.

That sucks. For him and the Jays.

We've been missing the good right handers late in the game. Before Sanchez came up, Gibby really didn't have any righty that had been steady. We could have really used Wagner next year when Sanchez is starting, Janssen likely gone and Delabar/Santos likely MIA.

Wagner just had TJS, when was he going to be used next year?

I'm hoping the Jays pick him back up on a MiLB deal as was mentioned. It appears the 40 man roster crunch led to him being removed and it makes sense with him being out of commission until atleast 2016.

I know

I mean the injury/surgery/release all sucks for us and him but releasing was obviously the right thing to do right now.

We abused your arm, it shockingly gave way, now get the eff out of here.

NW: "If that's true, how do you still have a job?"

Blue Jays announce they've released Neil Wagner.

So how many times did Wagner come in and throw 50+ pitches in relief? Guy must be livid with the org.

None

Right, but he did throw 47 pitches in 1.1 innings after being used the previous day on April 25th and 46 pitches in 1.1 innings on May 14th. It seems that the organizational philosophy to remove pitchers after throwing a lot of pitches in a short time didn't apply to Wagner. I'm not saying that he wouldn't have been hurt otherwise, but to be used like a rented mule and then released when your arm explodes must not feel very good.

I'm sure there's conversations with him or agent about his release and if there's future plans or not. Sure it stinks, but since everyone in knows that baseball's a business, it shouldn't take much dialogue to explain to Wagner, what's happening.

And I blame the Padres.

July 28th 2012 - 20 pitches

July 29th 2012 - 29 pitches

less than a week later

August 4th 2012 - 18 pitches

August 5th 2012 - 29 pitches

Regardless of what happened in SD (and throwing 45-50 pitches over two days is a lot more common than throwing 45-50 in one game), the team seems to have used him a lot more recklessly than they have used relievers that they're more invested in. When he's thrown 46 and 47 pitches in a game and none of Cecil, McGowan, Delabar, Janssen, or Santos have thrown more than 31, it looks bad. Especially when his arm blows out and he gets released.
