I really like Aoki as a player. Plus OF defender, average hitter who can get on base, and is a very tough out who can really handle the bat. I'd love for the team to sign him and let Melky go. He'll probably earn less than half of what Melky gets, might be the better player, and would allow the team to net a comp pick while not losing anything in LF.

Good idea. Let Melky walk, sign Aoki and spend the saved money in............................. HARDTHROWER RILIVA!!

Counterpoint: Aoki will be 33 next year and has been no better than 1-2 WAR every year in North America.

I may be going crazy but i could have sworn he was around 2 fWAR the last time i checked. What the hell happened to his base running?

2 years and 14 million with a team option for a 3rd (7.5 million) and 1 million buyout.

I think that's what he gets.

If I extend Melky for 4-ish years, I think I'm doing so assuming he becomes a primary DH (+ backup OF only) by year 3. At that point, I suspect we're done with Adam Lind.

Is everybody OK with that?

At least Melky can hit every day against every pitcher, but will cost quite a bit more than Lind

Lind one year >>>> Melky 4 years

Melky is only useful when he hitting .300-320 AVG

The dude can't catch, run or hit dingers.

Dunno. 1.1 fWAR this year with negative baserunning and an average bat (104 wRC+). + defense by UZR.

I'd still take that at half price compared to Melky *IF* I knew AA would spend the savings wisely elsewhere.

Why spend money, when you can trade assets like Lind, Burly etc.

Lind will be traded for a reliever this off season. Book it.

Phew!

I would do all this, but zero chance AA even considers. (plus low prob of being able to sign all those FA guys anyway)

identifying 3 free agents you want to sign and actually signing them is easier said then done. You don't think there are teams out there that want Russell, McCarthy and Aoki?

Comments on Melky from Bautista are really telling.

Not very many thinking Melky will be back including me.

Joey would know though. He's Melky's boy and I'm sure he knows what Melky wants and how the negotiations are going/have went.

Bautista on our 2B

"Goins needs to work on some things from the offensive side. He’s another high upside guy. He just has to put the ball in play and cut down on the strikeouts. He’s not going to be a guy to hit 30 home runs. You never know if he’s going to hit in the teens or in the 20s. He’s got the talent to do so. He needs more consistency in his approach, his game plan and the quality of his at-bats."

So he needs to change everything at the plate because he is terrible..... Makes sense lol.

I got a couple things from that....AA passed on Melky. He would have signed a deal here. Now maybe the hometown discount was still 4 years 55 mil, which is still expensive. We will never really know. Secondly, it sounds like if Bautista was GM he'd just hand centre to Pompey.

Yeah he eventually mentions Gose but it sounds like he just brought him up to be diplomatic. He doesn't seem too tore up about Rasmus leaving either. Sounds like he's fine with putting the Rasmus and Melky somewhere else (ignoring of course that some of that money is committed to salary increases).

Rasmus and Gose have the same problem. They are both mentally weak players. It doesn't matter how good your skill set is if you don't maximise that skill set. It sounded like Bautista was impressed with Pompey's instincts and baseball IQ. You can handle some growing pains with a player who will make adjustments, work hard and improve.

Yes but Bautista said it more nicely! LOL

Don't really feel like sifting through the various threads discussing what AA has talked about regarding these players, so could someone sum up what was actually indicated about the following (in terms of likelihood of bringing them back) ... I put my impressions, or what I could remember from discussions, where I saw fit

Janssen

M Cabrera - ship has sailed, won't be coming back

Rasmus - no way

Happ

Santos

Thole

McGowan

Lind - option will be picked up

Morrow - maybe as a reliever

You can't have Dickey without Thole so o think that is a sure thing

I also think Happ is a sure thing even if you just take the option and move him for a b prospect

This covers the press conference: http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2014/9/29/6864199/alex-anthopoulos-press-conference

He really didn't say much that's of any substance in the PTS interview. In that one, he said some nice things about Lind to smooth over any possible controversy over Lind's criticism of the team and talked about the bullpen again as a major dissapointment.

Heh. AA is finally catching on to some things I've been harping about ... getting steady, healthy guys over high ceiling, injury prone guys ... and using the DH properly (to rest guys).

Jesus Christ, how are these things not followed universally? They're so f***ing basic, and so completely true. "Oh, I think we should maybe NOT stick the fork in the socket this time!"

But this does maybe seem like the Lind option isn't a sure thing (I had gotten the impression it would be). He may finally get a hang of this GM thing by the time he's fired.

Nothing on the Happster, though (his option should be declined).

Seems like he's got all his rationales ready for why he's declining everybody's option. Hopefully, he's not merely covering for a decrease in budget.

"He’s third in OPS behind Victor Martinez, a first baseman-DH and Jose Abreu, a first baseman. Jose played right field, centre and first."

Mike Trout was 3rd in OPS, Bautista 4th...

Edit: After reading the entire article I feel worse about him as the GM. f***in referenced wins and comparing Buehrle and Price. I'm not sure if that was because he was talking to the Toronto Sun and wanted to appeal to that audience but I'm not a fan of hearing it. I really wish we could get someone to interview him and ask him questions about advanced stats and what are his thoughts on wRC+ and pitch framing.

Posted
Q: How amazing is Mark Buehrle? He said on the radio after you were eliminated ‘now people will show their true colours’ and he pitches 8.1 scoreless.

A: “People don’t give him the respect he deserves. You throw 202 innings and have a 3.39 ERA you’ve had a few good starts. Look at David Price. He pitched 241 innings, has a 3.36 ERA and he won one more game than Buehrle. I’m not saying Buehrle is Price, but Buehrle has been real good for a long time.”

"Kyle Kendrick has 64 wins. Do you know how many wins Matt Garza has? 67." - RAJ

Is that what Elliot said? lol
