I was going to make this about Blue Jays past and present but changed my mind and made it about active contracts in the majors.

Easily Poo Holes. 2021...

Yeah... though he's shown some signs of coming out of the funk, it does seem awfully bad.

A-Rod, Upton, and Howard probably for me. For shorter term ones, definitely Wells too. At least *most* of the other guys on the list are performing reasonably, just not at the expected level.

How about Uggla - now providing negative WAR

You need to evaluate contracts at the time it is made and not where we're at now. Otherwise you could say today that Tanaka has the best contract in the majors, but he could all of a sudden fall of the cliff and become injured for the next several years.

I bet if you asked about Ricky Ro's contract 3 years ago, no one would have said that it was a terrible contract. Same with Lind and Hill +5 years ago.

The contract that is the worst in baseball is Pujols'. Yeah he was still producing when he signed that contract, but he doesn't seem like a player who would age well. And you're paying him so much for past performance.

BJ Upton is the right choice here. Pujols is very costly, but atleast he provides some value. This could change in a couple years though.

No. Not asking how bad the contract was at the time of signing. That's not the point of this. What's the point of you though?

Pujols is going to be like 50 when his contract is over. He could be close to 50 now, nobody knows!

That's his secret. He's always 50.

Arod is already 39yr old and owed $64M through 2017... With a year off I don't see how that can be beat. There is zero value in the contract.

Verlander is interesting, is it just the slight drop in velocity (~2 mph max and ~1 mph average) that is leading to the performance drop-off?

I think averaging 210IP since 2006 is probably contributing to his troubles. No doubt the innings are taking a toll on him.

Howard. He can't f***ing play baseball. Sabathia is injured. Pujols is still awesome even if he's overpaid. Verlander's had a bad half season. But Howard? He's just terrible and committed to for the long run. Not his fault that RAJ is a dumbshit but wow that was a stupid deal.

I'm not sure that this logic is correct.

Has anyone done a study on this? I'm curious to know.

I've always rejected the "an arm only has so many bullets" hypothesis. It's made up of muscles, not gun parts.

Pujols is good, I wouldn't say awesome. He's a ~3 win player or so on a much lengthier and more expensive contract than Howard's.

I'm not one for semantics. He's an all-time GOAT and still performing at a very high level. He's obviously overpaid but he's still pretty awesome to watch and I still like the guy.

Yep obviously a very great career. But Pujols stands to make $113M after Howard's deal runs out! That's a crazy sum of money and there's a decent chance he's as useless as Howard for some of those years.

Reyes. Huge overpay for a career loser.

I know you hate him, i am not a huge fan either but he is on pace for a 3 war season. Now, will he stay healthy the rest of the season, no probably not.
