jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Scott MacArthur @TSNScottyMac 1m Darin Mastroianni will join #BlueJays in Baltimore. Bobby Korecky back to Buffalo. #MLB #Orioles No surprise. With righties for the entire Orioles series and the Yankees series, no sense for Pillar to be here. Mastro can at least steal us a base, and he's done well in AAA, and he can play CF.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Geez I missed the whole part where Korecky rejoined the team.
Convo Verified Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 AA loves to make moves when the team is struggling... all part of his smoke and mirrors tactics

TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 This one makes sense though. Pillar and Mastro are similar enough and this gives them the ability to make a true decision when Rasmus gets back. If Mastro is playing well you can move Gose down. If Gose and Mastro are struggling you can go back to Pillar in 9 days. I still don't see the true value in keeping Rasmus and Gose but it certainly does give us our best defensive options.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Get well soon Colby Rasmus.
Convo Verified Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Mastro is a terrible option. He has never done anything to warrant a call up. Terrible minor league stats (.745 career OPS for an OF is bad), and terrible major league stats. He's Munenori Kawasaki if he was white and played OF (his OBP and SLG are essentially identical). Thats ok if he's a minor league depth MIF as Kawasaki is, but not as an OF as Mastro is. I hope he never gets an at bat. He can't be worse then Kevin "Thinks he's Vlad Guerrero" Pillar
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 They are similar in that both only have value in playing the OF and can be effective against LHP. I am a big supporter of Pillar as a 4th OF but he has options and is swinging a pitches that he doesn't swing at in the minors. Career OBP vs. LHP Colby .284 MLB Mastro .334 MLB .414 MiLB Pillar .302 MLB .398 MiLB Gose .270 MLB .317 MiLB There is no doubt that Colby is the only one of the crowd that can hit for much power...but getting on base Mastro is probably the best option against LHP. Pillar will be better eventually but Mastro can probably help as much at the given time.

Mastro can also steal some bags like Gose off the bench so that's fine.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 I got a feeling Gose will be part of a trade package in the coming weeks. AA can patchwork CF in 2015 if Rasmus walks until Pompey is ready in 2016.

Yes he's having a decent year in HighA but the jump to AA is huge, let alone AAA and then the majors. He's also going to be burning option years starting next season as he'll be Rule 5 eligible after this season and I'm sure the Jays will be protecting him.
