#BlueJays name Bob Stanley bullpen coach, replacing Pat Hentgen, giving Hentgen time off to support family & help look after his ill father.

Had no idea Hentgen's dad was ill, hope he gets better, gonna miss Hentgen being a part of the staff. Anyone heard of Stanley? Name rings a bell but don't know anything off the top of my head.

It is the same Bob Stanley that used to pitch for the Red Sox back in the day.

...and our AAA coach, I'm assuming.

Some of you may have watched him give up the Bill Buckner groundball last night, they showed the game on sportsnet.

Poor Hentgen. Gets the BP job, has to back out after a single year because of his daughter's illness. That finally stabilizes and he returns to the BP job, then has to back out the next year because of his dad being ill. Poor guy.

I may as well be the first to say it, but why the hell wasn't Halladay named the BP coach (unless he wants some time off or wants to be in the front office)?

They've been showing old WS games all week. I'm liking that s***.

I never get tired of watching boston lose. The only thing better is 92/93!

Agreed. I saw that game too. If only Buckner hadn't let that ball go through him. Bob Stanley was actually a good pitcher in his day, but his later years (1986, 1987, 1989) were terrible.

Too bad you weren't 19 and 20 like I was, good times!

It would have been quite a party! Although I'm just happy I was old enough to remember it (4 and 5).

He's a guy who I have a few 5-cent baseball cards from the 80's lying around somewhere. And 5 cents is being generous.

Watched the classic Reds-Red Sox 1975 Game 6

That was the series that hooked me on baseball, I was 9 yrs old and a diehard Reds fan for the next 5 or 6 years before switching to the Expos of Carter and Dawson and Rogers, and finally the Blue Jays of Stieb and Bell and Barfield

2-time all-star, Red Sox Hall of Famer, current record holder for relief innings pitched in a season in the AL (168.1). Has worked with the likes of AJ Burnett, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez, and Brian Wilson. I think he is worthy of the spot.

No I'm serious. They probably wanted him out but didn't want to fire him.

Dude, if he has sick family he has sick family, and I have no idea why Hentgen would be forced out, don't read too far into it.

Maybe he didn't gel with Gibbons. Maybe didn't like being assistant pitching coach. All I know is that I don't believe anything that comes out of management.

So what would you have believed if Management said they fired him because he didn't gel with Gibbons? :)

Hentgen is a stand up guy. If they're saying it's for family reasons (and they do in fact specifically state that his dad is ill), you can believe it's true.

I would have believed it if they said they didn't gel. I think Hentgen is standup, my comments weren't directed at him. I always liked and respected him going back to his playing days. I find management is not reliable these days.

I see no reason not to believe the story. Why would they want to get rid of Hentgen, he was in charge of the one area of the team that actually excelled last year. They could have fired him when they fired all the other coaches if that's what they wanted. Not worth the time to come up with some conspiracy theory here.
