fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I'm happy Napoli is gone. Hopefully they also miss on Choo and Beltran. I think Beltran's going back to KC. They want to contend and can probably afford him. As for Choo... I hope he stays as far away from the AL West as possible lol
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 No DH, 1B, LF, CF, RF? Better sign Cano and try to win now! Smoak is a half-decent 1B or DH and they have enough money to sign Napoli or Morales for the other. Seems like they can sign a second-tier outfielder too, maybe Corey Hart. Then if they acquire Price or another top starter with Walker, their rotation will be really good. I think that team would have a shot at the playoffs. The Mariners didn't have a whole lot of hope in 2015+, so why spend another year in mediocrity for nothing? They'd only continue to fall behind the A's and Rangers, and soon the Astros would be on them. Winning games is the goal of any MLB franchise, and Cano will win the Mariners a lot of games. Maybe they'll lose the $/WAR Olympics, but they do have a lot of payroll flexibility and have had a difficult time recently getting players to take their money. They needed something big to happen this offseason. Cano qualified as that and they could afford it, so they pulled the trigger. I like this move a lot.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 When I first saw this title thread I read it as "Colon to settle". Take that for what you want. Many possible meanings.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Smoak is a 100 wRC+ bat. He's pretty much replacement-level. I guess I just don't understand what it is they think they've accomplished here or why "something big needed to happen". Unless they add another 10 wins or so they'll be wasting what is likely Cano's best year as a Mariner. They pretty much need Choo and Beltran and Price to get to 90+ wins now. As we saw last offseason, jumping the gun by adding 15 wins in a single offseason usually doesn't end well. Too bad the Yankees got to him first LOL
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Napoli and Beltran now gone. LOL Mariners. Overpay for Price coming up!
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Overpay for Price coming up! I love this. I actually have a soft spot for the Mariners, but I have an even bigger soft spot for watching bad moves blow up. Jack-Z is going to be panicking hard if he misses on Choo. If we decide to blow things up.... Seattle could be VERY helpful At this rate, Tampa will trade Price + Daelmon Young for half the M's farm!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 If we decide to blow things up.... Seattle could be VERY helpful At this rate, Tampa will trade Price + Daelmon Young for half the M's farm! They could be very helpful regardless. Maybe Jack-Z will panic and do something like Lind + for Franklin and Smoak...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 They could be very helpful regardless. Maybe Jack-Z will panic and do something like Lind + for Franklin and Smoak... Smoak? Haven't we had had enough bust hitting prospects recently??
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 They could be very helpful regardless. Maybe Jack-Z will panic and do something like Lind + for Franklin and Smoak... That's.... If he does do something like this, then Friedman will f*** Seattle to the point that Taijuan Walker, Danny Hultzen and another top prospect will go for Price lol. That can't happen, if it does I don't know what I'll do!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Smoak? Haven't we had had enough bust hitting prospects recently?? I'm not sure I'd qualify him as a bust yet. Regardless, he has hit better outside of Safeco the last few years. Anyhow, the real prize would be Franklin.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 It's going to be amazing in 2015 when the Rays have successfully moved Shields and Price for Myers, Walker, and Paxton and are actually getting better production for fewer dollars. http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110515035219/uncyclopedia/images/a/a9/Mah_balls_oh_god.jpg Man.... if Z gives up Walker and Paxton....
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I think Beltran's going back to KC. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned down their offer, and that's why they acquired Aoki.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I wouldn't be surprised if he turned down their offer, and that's why they acquired Aoki. That makes a lot of sense now actually!
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 If it's true that Beltran spurned the Royals' offer, then it may be another example of certain teams being a disadvantage in FA and the only other way for them to get their targets is by overpaying.

That would make sense. Supposedly the Royals offered $48M over three years
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 That would make sense. Supposedly the Royals offered $48M over three years He decided to go take $3M less from the Yanks? That sucks for KC and their fans
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 That would make sense. Supposedly the Royals offered $48M over three years If Beltran refused more money, then I should've said 'by overpaying by a lot'. This is also partly why the M's overpaid for Cano by so much, not trying to make excuses for them, but it is what it is.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I don't disagree, but feeling sorry for them is like pitying the a 300-pound pimply-faced fedora-wearing neck-bearded WOW addict because he can't get a date. At some point you have to get up off your ass, fire Dayton Moore, and actually make yourself a destination. Years of mismanagement have rendered them an undesirable destination to free agents. I'd guess that a couple of playoff births would change all that. Players sign in f***ing Detroit and Cleveland. Well, I don't disagree either, haha...and DM just got an extension so the owner must be satisfied. Since I touched on the owner, I think it starts with him, including the Rays or Blue Jays or Mariners or Yankees. I mean you can't sign Cano without the owner being a big part of the decision-making process.

kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Beltran probably didn't sign with the Royals because he didn't want to get eaten by a fan. http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/enHfzOhQKOYZm3ptjCIjVA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en/blogs/sptusmlbexperts/jimmyhug092213.jpg
