The Tigers are nearing a deal with free agent closer Joe Nathan, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

"The 39-year-old Nathan is coming off one of the finest seasons of his storied career, having pitched to a 1.39 ERA with 10.2 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 64 2/3 innings with the Rangers in 2013. Nathan added 43 more saves to his resume, tying him for 10th all-time with the legendary Rollie Fingers at 341. Not surprisingly, he is the active Major League leader in saves."

For DDL repercussions, a resounding meh!

Tigers defence will be better, but it's more a hitters park according to park factor (which surprised me) but the Tigers should get more save opportunities. I dunno. I'm rambling.

Yeah, in before these morons end up paying Nathan 1.5 to 2x what Fister would have made. Oh well, I hope it's a high price, it just makes the relief market even more lucrative and helps raise the prices on our relievers.

Another expensive closer:

Tigers To Sign Joe Nathan

By Steve Adams [December 3 at 2:25pm CST]

2:25pm: Nathan's deal is in the $20MM range, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter).

10:55am: The Tigers are in agreement with Joe Nathan on a two-year deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (Twitter link). Nathan is represented by agent Dave Pepe of Pro Agents, Inc.

Come on AA, you have like 3 guys who can close, all making 4M or less

Trade some!!!

The paradox is this: The GM's who understand that in order to be a closer, you don't need to have prior saves on your resume, are also the ones who know what the real cost of a closer should be in a trade.

Fabulous point

Delabar and Janssen trade roles, Delabar collects 55 savez and suddenly the Dombrowskis and Amaro Jrs will overpay for him?

This should be done annually then. The rotating of the closers that is.

Yeah I mean it's pretty clear that Janssen will more than likely fetch the most on the market, when Delabar is probably objectively better, and Cecil could be argued to be better at this point also (keeping contracts in mind). So what does that mean? You be the judge.

If Santos can stay healthy he becomes highly desirable again, and has the heftiest contract
