Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Fluffy mainstream article, perhaps a load of crap... I don't know. Hope you guys give Jeff Passan some crap.. I certainly get it when I bring Farrell up.... http://sports.yahoo.com/news/manager-john-farrell-proving-to-be-the-difference-for-red-sox-050728453.html Money quote "That's not factoring in all the other things. Every player on a team has a range of possible performance outcomes. Everyone has a high end, a low end and the most likely outcome in the middle. And if more players are performing toward the top half of that range, and the manager has something to do with that, the manager is absolutely valuable. It's still players first. You have to have talent to win. But I dismiss that a manager can't be more than his strategy."
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 20 War manager. Its real IDK.. I'm not saying "win one for the gipper" speeches do anything.. and I understand bullpen/lineup changes prob only account for a handful of games per season..so I'm not a believer in a manager as any major plus WAR.. But I believe clubhouse cancer could effect a mlb team just like it could any high-stakes workplace. I think just about any manager in baseball might have been 10 or wins better with the Sox then Bobby V.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 20 War manager. Its real I'm not claiming he's worth 20 War. I like Gibby better anyway. My view is a successful organization needs to be strong at 1. manager 2. general manager 3. ownership/president (with president position becoming even more important with coorporate ownership). For it to work you need all 3. Farrell leaving didn't cost the Jays a win. Gibby is fine too. I like him and he hope someday gets a good blue jays team to work with. But when the sox got Farrell they then had strength at field manager, general manager and ownership.

They could play without one for all i care..baseball is probably the one team sport where the head coach sits on his ass all game, doesnt really do anything and yet somehow gets the credit when the pitching/hitting coach do a lot more work. Baseball is incredibly overated as a "team" sport, but it really comes down to a bunch of individuals in the grand scheme of things.

If someone like Valentine is causing a shitstorm and acting like a goof the entire time, the manager can certainly bring down a team IMO, I just dont really think it works the other way around.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I thought you were gonna praise Farrell here and I was ready to blast you lol. But Olerud, man, you gotta stop making threads. Don't get me wrong, I agree with nearly everything you say, but we get your shtick, and at this point the threads are to a point of ridiculousness
