jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 The way I see it is that since it's unlikely they get a #1 or 2 type starter, they should focus on improving the C and 2B positions. There are some good bullpen pieces that could attract some interest. I'd be willing to deal 2 of Janssen, Santos and Delabar as well as Cecil. No matter how you slice it, in order for the Blue Jays to contend in 2014, they'll need Cabrera and Morrow to be healthy and play/pitch well. They'll need Dickey to pitch close to his 2010-2012 level. They'll need Bautista and Encarnacion to be healthy, Rasmus to have a similar year and Lawrie to be healthy and hit well. Improving at C and 2B will be key. If Dickey has better luck on his side, and doesn't get hurt like he did earlier on this season, I think a return to his 2010-2012 version is possible. He can't give up 35 HR's and have a HR/9 of 1.40 again and expect to return to his 2010-2012 form. Those numbers have to come down. He still gave the Jays 224.2 innings, though his K/9 were lower and his BB/9 were higher in comparisons to previous years with the Mets. If he can improve in those areas, then I think he can pitch better in 2014 then he did this season. Still I don't expect him to pitch like a Cy Young winner. Morrow has huge question marks which is why it's imperative the Jays go out and acquire another durable starter who can provide 200 quality innings. Doesn't have to be a No. 1 or No. 2 like you said, since that's likely not going to happen anyways. Though I don't want to see so many starters used again in 2014 - guys like Ramon Ortiz, Chien Ming Wang, Edgar Gonzalez better not even see the light of the day in 2014 with this team.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 I don't know, honestly. Maybe D.J. Davis? I'm sure they'd rather move McCarthy. Colon is old and he's getting a stupid amount of help from O.co with his HR/FB, he'd give up 25 homers in Rogers Center. No thanks. I'm thinking the Cards likely would want more for Lynn. I don't have a problem with the Jays trading one or two of their excess BP arms in exchange for McCarthy, though not sure he makes a difference since he's not that durable and likely wouldn't fit well pitching in the AL East and at the Rogers Centre. I don't think AA would target him anyways since he's not a lock to give them 200 innings. I'm not a huge fan of Colon as well, though I'd be open to bringing him in as a No. 5 starter on a reasonable contract. If the Jays traded two top prospects for Dickey last offseason, I'm sure AA wouldn't have a problem signing Colon to a reasonable one-year contract lol - I could see it being a possibility.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 That's one huge if. Agreed. Which is why I'm not counting on Dickey to pitch like an ace in 2014 and I sure hope the Jays don't as well.

I'm fine with getting another starter, I'm just afraid of what AA would agree to give up to get one given what he gave up in trades beginning with the Happ trade. I know that Morrow is a question mark, but for the team to contend, I think they'll need most of the things I listed to go their way and Morrow is one of those.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 28, 2013 Author Posted September 28, 2013 Even if the Jays traded for Cahill, they would still have enough money to go out and sign someone like Bartolo Colon for a reasonable one-year contract if they really wanted too. You can never have enough pitching. I have Ruiz pegged as a favourite to land in Toronto this offseason Ken. I think he makes the most sense since McCann will cost way too much, and I'm not sure Salty will be worth the contract he'll get on the open market. Ruiz is the type of catcher the Jays need after the circus they went through with JPA over the past three years. I,m all over Ruiz as I agree MCCann is not likely going to come here . You can never have enough pitching but whatever we add we lose some to waivers . Yes we could send guys with options down but some of them are the better pitchers . I don't know who guys think we could get better than Cahill unless thet gut the minors again and I refuse to do that .
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 28, 2013 Author Posted September 28, 2013 I don't think the DBacks would trade him, they've been looking for a starter and he's on a great contract. Lance Lynn plz Why would the Cards trade Lynn ,They have the deepest minor leagues ,lack nothing at the majors they can't fill from below and have tons of young pitching with options and lynn is still cheap. Cahill isn't cheap for what the snakes can afford and he is a ground ball pitcher that has been durable . No not a 1or 2 but who is that is available to a team with little to trade

I think they'd trade Lynn, it's not like they highly regard him or anything, at least I don't think.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 28, 2013 Author Posted September 28, 2013 Improve the defense and the rotation gets much better . Our defense was terrible last year and that took a toll on our pitching . Start with Ruiz , add a Cahill , then look to add an LF and 2nd Baseman
