G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2013 Author Posted August 31, 2013 Wow They really want to get it done this year
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Only took Alex Presley, nice move from Huntington
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Morneau has been terrible for 3 years now, he's not even an above average 1B at this point, let alone an impact player.

Yeah. That MVP year feels about a decade ago now. He's probably not even better than Adam Lind now. Think he'll get much in free agency?
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Not much likely.. considering Garret Jones and Gaby Sanchez haven't done much, this is a good trade for the Pirates, as they try to make it to October for the 1st time since the Jays first won the World Series.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Is he eligible for post season? I think so.

Think he'll get much in free agency? How did he even win that MVP award? All I remember was Grady Sizemore having a monster year in 06. Thought he should have won it.

He was ranked #49 in fWAR that year. And that's only among position players. (e: s***, this is among the entire league lol)
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Also, some eye-popping WAR totals from that year: Bonderman = 5.9 (WTF?) Millwood = 4.8 Garland = 3.7 Guillen = 6 Inge = 4.1 And our very own Johnson had 4.4. Cat/Johnson platoon. I loved that tandem.

I hope so. It would be nice to make a trip down for some playoff baseball.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Also, some eye-popping WAR totals from that year: John Lackey 5.7 Jason Jennings 4.4 Kelvim Escobar 4.3 Bill Hall 5.0 Garrett Atkins 5.7 Freddy Sanchez 4.5 Nick Johnson 5.0 David DeJesus 4.2 Joe Crede 4.0 Ryan Freel 3.8 And 5.7 from Vernon Wells. 2006 was a weird year.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2013 Author Posted August 31, 2013 Is he eligible for post season? Anyone acquired up until today is eligible. Last day.
Convo Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 This is a confusing move. Morneau is not even an upgrade over Garret Jones & Gaby Sanchez. Morneau hit 9 dingers in August, maybe they're thinking they can ride his hot streak?

GNick Verified Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Morneau could hit 30 homers at Rogers, with better glove than Lind
KSaw Verified Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Worked for the Yankees with Soriano. Anyone who says this isn't a good move is dumb. Morneau is very much an upgrade over Jones and Sanchez. I believe Jones can still be a decent player long term but Gaby Sanchez sucks. Also allows them to sit Sanchez, play Jones in RF and Morneau at first.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 Any chance AA buys out Lind and signs Morneau this off season?? I don't know if that makes any sense at all (it probably doesn't) but AA likes him and Morneau has said publicly that he'd like to play for the Blue Jays.

I guess it's possible, but we'd basically be substituting one guy who can't hit lefties for another (and pay more to do so).
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Lind's wRC+ is about 25 points higher than Morneau, and he's younger. But sure, let's let him walk and sign Morneau for twice as much. Hayhurst should be ashamed for even suggesting that idea.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Oh, but take Morneau out of Minny and he'd hit 30 HR! Except that his OPS is 170 points higher at home and his road OPS is well under .700. I wish people would at least look at basic splits before constructing such terrible narratives.

In simple language ... Morneau is a less productive hitter that Lind to a higher cost. MoneyBall 1 > 0 No matter what or who's who. Mitch Moreland > Pujols (surplus value)

I think he was just trying to argue that they could sign him to 'appease' the fans and have a new marketing ploy to attract people back. Though he did mention that Morneau would hit more HR here, which you've already had a counter point for. Regardless, neither players is the solution but I irrationally expect one of them to be playing with us next season.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 Regardless, neither players is the solution but I irrationally expect one of them to be playing with us next season. Yup. And we might as well keep Lind. Someone will give Morneau more than the money we owe Lind next year. Money is better spent on SP and C.
KSaw Verified Member Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 No matter who they want playing 1b or DH next year, Lind's option gets picked up. He has trade value.
KSaw Verified Member Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Still like the idea if signing Lind, trading him and signing Beltran. I get that he didn't come last time around but this club has several of his best friends on it, is closer to winning (in spite of this season's results), and at his age he is less opposed to DHing some.
