i love it when Bowden looks like an idiot

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and SiriusXM reports that the chances of the Rangers making a trade for Alex Rios are "smaller than a bread basket."

Garcia is interesting to me. 80 speed, 70 arm good instincts can play every position but pitcher and catcher. If it weren't for his 20 brain he'd be a real player. He's more Sean Rodriguez like though

2013 32 Chicago White Sox $12,500,000

2014 33 Chicago White Sox $12,500,000

2015 34 Chicago White Sox *$13,500,000 $13.5M Team Option, $1M Buyout, *Trade escalates 2015 option by $500k

He is on ZIPS pace for 2.7 fWAR this season, more than worth his contract. If he declines "normally" then he should be worth the money next year too, but maybe just barely, depending on what $/WAR paradigm you believe in.

But we might not care the most about the mean case scenario with a guy like Rios. We already *think* based on 2011 and 2009 that his skill set has significant downside (and based on other years, upside. He's a volatile player).

When I look at a contract situation like Rios', I don't really see a big asset, not when we factor in the chance of a big downturn, which may or may not be exacerbated by his current age. His current age probably also bites into his upside a little bit.

This is what it is, and I don't see it as a steal. Not at all.

If I'm running a baseball team, I would want near guaranteed production for my 8 figure players. You get enough volatility out of your prospects and your league min young players and your pitchers. Let them boom or bust, and with the other 90% of your payroll, have the piece of mind of knowing what you're paying for.

Rios is never a sure thing to do anything though. He goes through another bout of depression and the Rangers are getting nothing from him.

I've seen Garcia play multiple positions here in the Dominican; His glove is stone but can hit.

He gets more hate on here than he prob should just because of his time in TO but he's a very solid player. He's just coming out from a terrible slump, he could still wind up giving 3 WAR on the season. Also, he just isnt hitting as well (he was to start the season) but the stats dont show his legs are going out from under him, so projecting a big drop off next year doesnt seem fair.

If he did get to 3 WAR, that would mean he gave 3+ WAR in 6 out of the last 8 seasons. Rios isnt a star but he's a good player. I think it's a real good move for TX.

Let's be fair and specify the 8 figure deal is 2/26. Would anyone be shocked if he had a 3-4 WAR season next year? Of course he could also be a little below average but 2/26 isnt a big risk to take.

He could also provide nothing, or worse, negative WAR, and he'd be the type of contract that you'd probably have to play full time (opportunity cost).

He's been worthless or worse in 2 out of his last 5 seasons.

I just really don't think he's the type of player where you can ignore the extremes and expect the mean. And I don't like his volatility in conjunction with his age. There are only so many 13M contracts that a team can fit on its payroll in any given year, no matter what team you're talking about. Rios certainly wouldn't be one of mine, but I guess Texas is kind of in dire straits with their current OF depth chart and Nelson Cruz situation.

Cruz has been on the clear decline in the field and on the bases the last 3 seasons. His only asset being a power bat, which is now highly questionable in terms of what to expect next season when you assume he's totally clean. It was a clear team upgrade without having to lock themselves in on a major new deal. Is there a risk, certainly.. but a good move I think

Garcia isn't really a guy, so I dig this deal for Texas. Good Alex is a very good baseball player, and at the very least you get plus defense and baserunning. 2/$26 isn't a very risky contract at all by current standards, and as I've mentioned a bajillion times, increased revenue sharing kicks in next year.

Of course, it bears mentioning that Rios is an apathetic piece of s*** who probably doesn't even like baseball. If you care about those kind of things.

He can hit, run and catch the ball. He,s a good baseball player for a decent salary.

When we gave away Rios it was after he amounted two consecutive 5+ WAR seasons... proof that the FO had (or has) no idea about the real value of a baseball player - instead they choose to measure a baseball player by a few mental mistakes that don't even remotely represent the sum of the parts.
