Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/r-a-dickeys-lost-velocity/ Less velocity=worse command. Less velocity=best command (Non-Knukleballers)
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/r-a-dickeys-lost-velocity/ Less velocity=worse command. RA has come out and said that it's because of his muscle spasm in his shoulder. he said that he cant extend fully on his release and that's why he has less velocity. he also said that it's getting better and that he feels that he is close. just say'n

Its possible, but it might also be a case of reaching conclusions too early Looking at the numbers, from 2008 onwards, Dickey's usually struggled with walks in his first month of the season (his worst BB/9 months each season are usually in April).

Flapjack Morris Verified Member Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Doesn't help that Dickey is tossing indoors!
blackjays21 Verified Member Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 the knuckball is a hard enough pitch to command its self, it takes time to warm up... R.A is gonna be fine once he gets over these muscle spasms.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Didnt know a harder knuckler is easy to command, pretty interesting
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I knew that was the reason for the loss of velocity, but it's interesting to see the correlation of the velocity affecting command Just Say'n his knuckle is using minimal rotation, but it is still rotation and more velocity always means less bite in any pitch. Dickey actually tries to put more control on his pitch than most other knuckleballers have. Wakfield just threw it up and hoped it was close and didn't get crushed. Dickey actually has a plan. have you seen "knuckeball?" very good movie and RA has some good things he talks about there. if you have not seen, I'd highly recommend it.
