I think he will be okay life wise, likely fractured orbital bone. Probably had a concussion too, but the fact that he acknowledged the crowd meant that he was responsive.

 

Could be a Brian Berrard type of situation, so he might not pitch for a while, but lifewise he will be fine after the surgery and rehab

It's really hard to say. He could completely luck out and come out of this unscathed. It could be a career ender or it could be that he has no serious short-term effects but will have dizzy spells and memory loss the rest of his life. Only time will tell.

I talked a bit about this over the winter. They should equip a pitchers hat with a thin gel type material which could absorb a lot of the impact while being barely noticeable.

Actually now that I think about it, that's a good solution assuming that most people will have time for the instinct to turn their head and take it off the temple.
