Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Yup, baseball doesn't matter when stuff like this happens. Hope he is okay.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Yep Holding out hope for the best!
Metallijay Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Agreed that was scary, no one wants to see that.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 @BlueJays: J.A. Happ has left the game after being struck by a line drive. We will keep you posted when more information is received on the injury.
Clomero Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 even if he doesnt pitch again im hoping for a mccarthy, at least he got a big paycheck last offseason
Dude Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Wonder if we'll get some updates soon? Not watching the game at the moment
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I'm guessing left orbital fracture. Looks like it hit him on the temple. Done for the season.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Whether he plays again or not, I just hope the guy is okay.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I just saw the video, that looked horrible. I really hope he's ok and no lasting damage.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 No updates yet? I stepped out for a bit.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 @gregorMLB: Short story on the scary situation regarding J.A. Happ. Video is also available: http://t.co/tO43TnphSu #BlueJays (will be updated)
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Pitchers need to wear helmets. I dunno when people will learn.
JaysZee Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I think he will be okay life wise, likely fractured orbital bone. Probably had a concussion too, but the fact that he acknowledged the crowd meant that he was responsive. Could be a Brian Berrard type of situation, so he might not pitch for a while, but lifewise he will be fine after the surgery and rehab
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Pitchers need to wear helmets. I dunno when people will learn. Really they need full out cricket gear. But just like the NHL bravado won't allow for it. This doesn't happen often enough for it to be a real action for change
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 I'm glad we won this one for Happ.
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Probably had a concussion too, but the fact that he acknowledged the crowd meant that he was responsive. That's not necessarily a good thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_interval

This doesn't happen often enough for it to be a real action for change The bowlers do not have any protective gear in cricket. It isn't really necessary since you don't try to hit line drives in cricket. What pitchers need is a Petr Cech-like helmet.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 That's not necessarily a good thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_interval It's really hard to say. He could completely luck out and come out of this unscathed. It could be a career ender or it could be that he has no serious short-term effects but will have dizzy spells and memory loss the rest of his life. Only time will tell.
HASHTAGYOLOSWAG Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I talked a bit about this over the winter. They should equip a pitchers hat with a thin gel type material which could absorb a lot of the impact while being barely noticeable.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Wishing Happ positive thoughts and a speedy recovery!

Actually now that I think about it, that's a good solution assuming that most people will have time for the instinct to turn their head and take it off the temple. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/protective-headgear-pitchers-fast-track-mlb-says-200533810--mlb.html
