NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Sunday rest apparently, he's available to pinch-hit. There are rest days built into the schedule, I don't understand why managers feel the need to regulate it themselves.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 That's weird, and we're screwed without him lol. Wait, is DeRosa playing 3rd? Yeah, okay, we're done.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Not like today is a must win game or anything! Lawrie is such a massive bust with the bat, but the glove provides so much value. Still though, I can't believe how brutal he's been with the bat. Looked like we were gonna have a perennial 6-7WAR third baseman. Now we have an all glove-not bat hot head who can barely get on base. 7% walk rate with almost non-existant power over the past two years. Brutal.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Looked like we were gonna have a perennial 6-7WAR third baseman. Jesus aitch, who the hell EXPECTS 6-7 WAR? [7% walk rate with almost non-existant power over the past two years. Brutal. 7% is fine..? It's like a tick below league average.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted May 5, 2013 Author Posted May 5, 2013 I thout his bat was coming around in the last couple weeks. Sitting him just tells me it is ok to give up on the season now...Gibbs has so why can't I.

I think it's safe to start hoping for better performances from Buehrle, Johnson, Romero, Happ, Rasmus, Lind and a couple others so they can get a couple B prospects in return. But AA will probably use that to say 'see, I told you they'd start playing better' and not do anything, in fact he may trade Sanchez and Osuna for another middle reliever to compensate for previous failed middle relief acquisitions.

If he trades Sanchez I'm gonna freaking kill him. I would just snap.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Oh come on....this team has been horrific and gibby rests the only guy who can competently defend 3B? Hope Lawrie isn't hurting or something.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Jesus aitch, who the hell EXPECTS 6-7 WAR? [ 7% is fine..? It's like a tick below league average. This is a guy who started out with what appeared to be such a fantastic approach at the plate. Super patient (His O-Swing % has increased dramatically since that great first quarter season). Can't hit a fastball to save his life anymore. And with his defense it really wouldn't have been a stretch to expect 6 WAR a year from him. He was on pace for almost 3.5 last year even with average production at the plate.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Gibbons is Gibbons, he like to play with batting orders. It infuriates fans, I think it's a somewhat effective style but you need the right guy making the decisions. I'm not sure he's the right guy
Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I really don't have an issue with Gibbons, I think he is just trying to work with what he has and right now it isn't much. He has to try to shake things up to get this team going since nothing seems to be working at the moment.

Meh, your first point is fair, but he's not Brett Wallace or anything. My point is that I don't care how good a player is, EXPECTING 6+ WAR is pretty stupid and setting yourself up for disappointment.

It infuriates fans, I think it's a somewhat effective style but you need the right guy making the decisions. I'm not sure he's the right guy I think I read where Gibbons said he liked to have a set lineup everyday. Certainly the injuries have forced him to make changes, plus AA has given him a crappy bench. I read some quotes from AA saying part of the reason he's claiming so many guys is because he promised the Buffalo owners he'd do whatever he could to give them a competitive team...we'll he's succeeding in Buffalo, but not in Toronto.

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Where have I heard that before... I still can't believe I fell for the Josh Johnson "just some regular soreness, won't miss his next start" bit. He was available to pinch-hit, so this time maybe they weren't lying.

I hope they're aggressive with him given we only have him for 2013. He may be the biggest disappointment so far, I was expecting a #2 starter and instead he spent a month nibbling away before ending up on the DL.
