Because if there is no player with a little c on his uniform, the team will combust. You have to pick the right guy, too. It is absolutely critical and in no way trivial at all whatsoever

Why do managers wear uniforms? All other sports they wear a suit and tie, expect football... But still not a uniform. Every sport has some sort of tradition that doesn't really make sense.

There is actually a quasi-legal, on ice function. The Captain and assistants are the only players who the refs will really talk to and explain calls to.

I should have said why does hockey have all the pageantry with captains. I mean they could just write it on the game sheets. Vancouver named Luongo captain when he couldn't actually perform the on ice duties.
