TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I think: Brett Lawrie is better hitter than Machado I think you are very very wrong. Like Lawrie, Machado has shown that he will crush fastballs, however the recognition of the change and willingness to swing for singles (which he happens to get some doubles) it isn't close. Now for the next step, laying off of the curve, which will lead to more walks (generally). I'd say Machado ends up awfully close to a Adrian Beltre type. Of course Lawrie can develop too...but I just see Machado being much better at making adjustments.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I still love Machado, and all things considered, he blows Lawrie out of the water. I just think his skill set seems particularly prone to the type of year that, say, Starlin Castro is having right now. I can't really buy into anybody being a true talent +25 run defender, especially after one season. And for every assumed power increase that actually comes true, there are dozens that never come to fruition (ignored silent evidence). If you want to bet on him being a legit star level player year after year, then you have to buy into a lot of things. You'd be buying into an increase in .ISO, an increase in walk rate, the BABIP being true talent, the quantitative fielding value being true talent, blah blah blah.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 On the most recent Fringe Average podcast, Jason Parks said he'd rather have Machado's prime than Trout's or Harper's, which struck me as utter insanity.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 How insane is it that JPA has a higher walk rate than Machado does this year?
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Why not? At least Machado has seen/will see the playoff in his prime, unlike Trout and Harper, whose teams are headed for rebuilds.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Why not? At least Machado has seen/will see the playoff in his prime, unlike Trout and Harper, whose teams are headed for rebuilds. The Nationals aren't heading for a rebuild....
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Because the O's coaching staff knows nothing about taking walks--they're last in the AL in walks. Good thing they hit..
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 On the most recent Fringe Average podcast, Jason Parks said he'd rather have Machado's prime than Trout's or Harper's, which struck me as utter insanity. Machado is the most handsome though.
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 That roster is a mess. They don't have much on the farm.. and they have a number of holes on that roster.

He prefers "defensive player prime" over "5 tools stud player prime"; it's stupid CF is also a premium position in the defensive spectrum.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Why not? At least Machado has seen/will see the playoff in his prime, unlike Trout and Harper, whose teams are headed for rebuilds. Their teams are completely irrelevant. This was a hypothetical "which talent would you take?" scenario.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Machado is the most handsome though. I'd go with Harper.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Machado is the most handsome though. Bryce Harper is decidedly more handsome than Machado.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Dempster suspended 5 games and fined Girardi also fined Dempster has been so awful since the AS , thats probably a nice break for the Sox.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 If its 5 games, wouldn't that be one start? They should probably skip a few of his starts regardless, and he definitely shouldn't be in the playoff rotation.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Why would an off-day count as a "game"? It's a 5 game suspension, not a 5 day suspension.
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Well, d'Arnaud is still looking for a hit--and he's stopped walking as well--2 k's tonight. Perhaps the Braves have watched video on him while he was taking all those walks in San Diego.

You are honestly an extremely stupid human being.

digiblader Verified Member Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 No help for the Yanks--Oakland leads 4-0 in the 1st, as Joe Saunders stinks it up. We'll see what happens with the Boston game.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Shrimp in it's purest form...4 pitch walk-off walk San Fran beats Boston
digiblader Verified Member Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Well, Boston continues to screw around--John Farrell wasted his bullpen, letting Brayan Villareal in because they didn't want to use Koji Uehara. Villareal walked in the winning run(Scutaro)--and cost themselves another game. Tampa's now in 1st, and with series against L.A. (Dodgers) and the Orioles coming up, they can't afford to lose these games, especially with Tampa, Cleveland, and NY getting hot. Thanks to that loss, Boston's lead is down to 5 games on Cleveland, and they're tied with Tampa for 1st in the AL East and the 1st wild card. Bogaerts went 0-3 BTW..

D'Arnaud first MLB hit, a double It pleases me greatly that these two posts were 19 minutes apart. the D in d'Arnaud is not upper case, however, King. Please stop that!
