  1. If Jeter and co couldn't afford to buy the franchise, then they shouldn't have been allowed to bid. Apparently they are also prioritising salary savings over prospects in the Stanton trade too.
  2. The Clippers were rumoured to be asking for Middleton, Brogdon and Henson from the Bucks for Jordan. A ridiculous overpay that they won't get, but it might not be as cheap as you think to acquire him.
  3. If Diaz is so terrible why would the Jays want him? You don't think that the Cardinals traded him because he was blocked and wasn't going to start? What makes you convinced last year (when he was injured) is closer to his true talent level, and not the year before? IMO the situation is set up to give Diaz a chance to succeed - he won't initially start but should get lots of playing time over the season. Gurriel has only just turned 24 and was given a 7 year contract - he's not a normal prospect out of college and he had already been playing professional baseball when we signed him. I've always thought he'd be fast tracked to the majors, though his injury problems last year have undoubtedly set him back. It's strange that you write off the first 2, but not Gift, who has only played 28 games in the majors.
  4. I don't really agree with any of that!
  5. Both the younger guys were injured last year and should be better this year. Both the older guys have already peaked in their careers, and should be the same at best. Obviously nothing is guaranteed but I'm much happier with the new situation. It just adds to the number of young, controllable players on the roster that have got potential to grow and improve.
  6. I don't think that's fair, he was an all star in his rookie season, then got injured and lost his place last year. Seems the perfect kind of player to restart his career elsewhere.
  7. Dickey and Thole.
  8. When Tulo and Travis inevitably are both out at the same time, a middle infield of Diaz and Gurriel looks better than Goins and Barney, with the added bonuses of much more potential, and longer control.
  9. How are we going to replace all those RBIs!!! /s In all seriousness, I think non tendering Koehler is the more significant move, that money saved can now be spent more efficiently elsewhere.
  10. 38 homers seems like a small number for a franchise record!
  11. The Rays trade Boxberger to Arizona to save $1.9m in arbitration. The Rays are so cheap.
  12. This should finally end the speculation that the signing bonus a team can give him will play any significant part in his decision on which team to sign for.
  13. The Dodgers have signed a minor league deal with Pat Venditte (the switch pitcher). Hope he gets another chance, it was fascinating to watch him pitch.
  14. I had to Google them to find out they were hockey players! Looks like it was Burns who didn't get in when first nominated and still alive, then took 3/4 years after his death to be elected. I'll have to defer to hockey fans on whether he would have got in anyway.
  15. In the real world though it does. The voters who maybe would have left him off their ballots for the first few years will be swayed. I'm not saying that's the right thing to do or not, just that it will happen.
  16. Halladay signed a 1 day contract to retire with the Jays. IMO he'd have made it in anyway, but now he'll be first ballot HoF guaranteed.
  17. I didn't mean specifically in Toronto, I meant that he'll be able to sign sponsorship deals worth more than $3m who ever he signs for.
  18. Not a big enough difference to have any affect. If he doesn't sign here it'll have nothing to do with a bonus that will be dwarfed by (1) sponsorship deals and (2) his second major league contract. As others have speculated, once he picks the best fit for him that team can acquire pool money to make an offer respectable for union purposes.
  19. Yeah that's a really good point.
  20. That's pretty clear wrongdoing that doesn't really have a defence.
  21. What they did wrong: "The investigation found the franchise circumvented international signing rules from 2015 to 2017. The organization signed five players subject to the team’s signing bonus pool to contracts with bonuses lower than the what the club agreed to pay the players." "The investigation also found the Braves offered impermissible benefits to a player selected in the First-Year Player Draft, persuading said player to sign for a lower amount. "
  22. I wouldn't be surprised to see Greene have a bullpen cameo later this season.
  23. IMO it'd be a waste of money when other similar (i.e. not very good) relievers like Liriano and Feldman are likely available for cheaper than $6m.
