WAR needs to take importance of those innings to the result of the game into account. Same with hitters. The importance of a plate appearance relative to the result of the game should be taken into account. Instead of using a catch all formula, they should devise a weighted average formula, that distributes a win to the winning team in order of performance. -1 Win should go to the losing team.

It actually doesn't work like that. You can only have 1 cf 1 2b and 1 reliever. You have to look it based on WAR efficiency as well. You can't have two center fielders can you? If you already have Pillar and Travis what good will another centre fielder or second baseman do? You can't have two of them on the field. Where as once Osuna is gone you can say goodbye to that 2 WAR reliever with no one to replace him with. Virtually you have a incremental WAR loss overall if you make that transaction Also prospects are not guaranteed. Pillar was projected as a AAAA player and Tigers traded Travis for what they thought was a 4th outfielder Where as Smoak was going to be the next Mark Tiexara and Jesus Montero was going to win MVP awards with his bat

They are diversifying the risk. If their hitting does get on a hot streak they want to have a decent bullpen and try and get a wild card. They know they can't compete with the Jays for the division

I'd rather have two elite top 5 relievers than a top 5 ace pitcher. I'd rather have Chapman and Miller giving me 7-8 innings a week than Sale going every 5 days I know conventional wisdom would say the ace is better.
