Malcolm Gladwell wrote a fascinating book called "David & Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants", where he touches on MLK and the Birmingham Children's Crusade, and the tactics (some of them, ethically questionable) used by MLK to try to gain support for his movement. While MLK might have preached non violence, he also recognized that the violence being used against blacks could be used as a way shocking white America out of its apathy towards them. While watching CNN, a young man said something along the lines of "maybe we're going the wrong way about it, but at least people are paying attention". And that's the thing, a silent protest probably won't do anything. The sad thing is, people are hurting themselves just out of this desperation. But would we even be talking this if there wasn't rioting? I think that must feel frustrating, to have people who didn't know or care about you, who have an entirely different life experience, suddenly scold you for your actions.
