This is a really poor statement. Despite the impressive half season, let's not forget that Carrera (as well as Smoak) has been an entirely replacement level player his entire career. Could something have changed? Sure, walks are way up, strikeouts are reasonable, and he's made some good contact this year. However, his defense is at times atrocious - he takes absolutely terrible routes and are often preceded by bad reads off the bat - despite being fast, he's not a particularly elite baserunner, and while I'd love to be wrong he's more than likely not this good of a hitter.
Is Smoak any better? No, not really, he has decent potential with the bat but has some of the biggest holes and easily exploitable flaws that I've seen in a Blue Jays hitter. He's only a 1B, a supposedly decent one at that - he is very sure handed - but still doesn't carry that much value.
This is not me advocating for Bautista in RF - the guy is clearly done as an outfielder - or completely s***ing on Carrera who has done a great job holding down the fort but to say that the latter is that much preferable to Smoak when in reality they're both rather inconsequential players is a stretch.
I put way too many hyphens in this post.
