even if the Jays don't manage to retain Price, would you say that this team still has a 2-3 year window provided that they sign some pitchers this off-season? the offence still looks like it has elite potential next season.
hurts to lose all of those prospects this year, but in the end, they did get Donaldson, Tulowitzki, and Price. not too many people would have expected this at this point last year; at least, the future was mortgaged for guys who have played at an elite level in their respective positions for a sustained period of time (i.e. 3-5+ seasons), something that wasn't really the case with Dickey, Johnson, and Reyes. with this in mind, I approve of the recent trades to push for contention even if the Jays fall short this year.
2016
LF: Pompey
CF: Pillar
RF: Bautista
3B: Donaldson
SS: Tulowitzki
2B: Travis
1B: EE
DH: Smoak/Valencia
C: Martin
Bench: Carrera, Saunders, Colabello, Goins, etc.
SP: Stroman, Hutchison, Sanchez, Dickey (if retained)/Osuna, Estrada. Probably need a #2 and #4
Bullpen: Cecil, Osuna (if not stretched to SP), Schultz, Tepera, Hendriks, Loup. Probably need a closer or set-up man if no one takes the reins in 2015.
with a lot of players coming off the books, I could see the core intact and AA retooling with free agent signings. the guys that the Jays gave up with the exception of possibly Norris probably wouldn't have made the team until 2017 at best. At least by keeping guys like Stroman/Sanchez/Travis/Pompey who can contribute now, there's at least another 2-3 years of realistic playoff potential. The rebuild probably won't start until 2018, which by then some of the vets would still have value and the remaining prospects (if they make it) could start to contribute - guys like Pentecost, Alford, DSJ, etc.
