  1. I wouldn't be opposed to giving him an extension depending on how he finishes the season and if he wants to stick around. He could just say f*** it and want out the door especially if the team has a shot to make the playoffs and sits on their hands. I'd wait until the end of the season, when the team has exclusive rights, or maybe late Sept, if they're out of the playoffs, to offer something modest and see if he takes it. The team needs some depth in both the pen, rotation and a swing man. You never know when someone will get hurt. Maybe he'll take a one year deal. Maybe a 2-3 year deal at a modest rate. Maybe he says I'm cashing in on the year I've had unless he implodes during the second half. Unless the Jays think they have better options internally or can actually sign someone better than AAAA or 25th man type players or piss away decent assets for guys who aren't going to be anywhere near where they once were, it's not a bad idea, but he's likely going to take his chance at FA elsewhere, maybe a pitchers park, or whomever offers the most money like many guys do unless the team makes the post season and even then he could go. I won't miss him if he's gone, but it speaks to the Jays needing to stabilize this pitching situation. They should have some more money next year but depending on who's GM and what "plan" is rolled out we'll see how it's spent and used.
  2. The Jays acquire (traded for) Brian Tallet from the Cards during the Rasmus deal while he was on the DL with an intercostal strain.
  3. Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I wouldn't be against the Jays giving up some talent if the return (mostly pitching) is under control for a few years. The Jays are kind of in a must win now year since MB is a FA, Dickey can be bought out, and the $12M he would cost could pick up a back end rotation guy who's 10 years younger and could put up similar or better numbers, so 2 of our vets and inning eaters will be gone. If a trade brings in a starter who can help the team win now plus stick around for a couple of years it would be the best case unless the Jays decide to go with the young pitchers, try to sign guys on the FA market (which wouldn't be easy if they had a chance to win a division and didn't at least try something other than bring up a AAAA player), or whatever. I don't like the idea of burning the farm for rentals or huge contracts that might handcuff the team later. I'm sure AA could play his cards right and pick up at least an arm for the pen and rotation. The pen might be more difficult since we'd be after a legit closer or someone who's more capable of coming in late (8th-9th) and close the door especially since Osuna can't pitch two inning saves every time out. The good news is if the Jays do pick up some players there is some money coming off the books. They even have cheap options on EE and Bautista. Problem is Martin and Reyes' contracts jump up to $20M or a bit more in Reyes' case so that's going to hurt the Jays a bit unless ownership keeps the payroll about where it is. If they manage to win that money might go up. I just have this feeling that if they don't get it this year, they might throw their arms up, say they've tried in that 3 year window, and then just run out the young pitchers and try a rebuild, blow it up, and we're back to square one like we've seen before. That being said I don't like the idea of selling the farm for players who aren't going to be under control for more than the rest of this year. You have to pay the price of business but the Jays just need some decent pitching. An ace or a solid #2 would be great, but someone who can eat innings, save the pen, give the Jays a chance to win with our offence, who is a lock for his starts, preferably a ground ball pitcher or someone who doesn't give up too many homers, and he might come cheaper this year and possibly next to resign. Having a true, shutdown ace would be great, especially if it's a Wild Card game, but if the Jays pitching just pitches decently and the offense can score, they should be fine if they can get another shutdown arm in the pen. Then again I might have no idea what I'm talking about
  4. Other than to get him some ABs no idea. Like you said the defense is what we need right now unless Goins is sore or is getting a scheduled day off.
  5. I was thinking along those lines as well. The Jays have enough pop and hitters where he becomes a bit redundant. He's been clutch last year, and has had some good ABs this year, but load him up with as many ABs as they can, let him get into a hitting streak, then try to find a team looking for a bat/catcher/both and try to make a deal. By the deadline he'll be owed less money so maybe a team is will to eat a little more of the contract, or if a team really is desperate the Jays pick up at least a semi decent player in exchange for the Jays eating his contract owed. Once Travis is back and if he can continue his offense at least a percentage of how he started off he should be able to help make up for Navarro's offense so it's more reason to try a trade. Then again maybe he stays a Jay and his bat helps win games. Who knows? Ideally the Jays can use him, maybe a low level prospect to pick up a decent starter or reliever who can shut the door. Anything that improves the team I'm good for.
  6. Like mentioned, the Jays haven't had a lot of save situations because they've been blowing teams out when they've won, but the few they've had, haven't gone well. Cecil seems like he's falling apart in these situations. He's probably better as a 7-8 inning guy. AA needs to find someone who can handle this role better. A legit closer, or someone who can come in and get the job done (someone who isn't your typical closer, or hasn't been one prior), has to be brought in. Cecil had an excuse earlier in the season when he missed time in ST and wasn't ready for the season, but he seems like he just can't handle it now. Maybe that changes if the team gets him more save opportunities, but someone has to slam the door when it's 3 runs or less or else we head to extras, lose, especially if this team wants to compete. Glad they won but it's like sitting on nails and broken glass in the save situations.
  7. If he's still sore, and it's nothing major, no sense in running him out there. DL him, retroactivate it, bring up someone to pitch, give Sanchez time off. Could help down the stretch and it would be a disaster to let him out there with something, even if it's just muscle soreness that isn't going away, to be aggravated, nag, make him less effective or might actually hurt him. With Estrada giving the BoSox back 5 runs after the Jays handed him 10 might be a red light to AA to try and nab at least a middle of the rotation kind of pitcher to help stabilize the rotation.
  8. Reyes costs us a run there. Hot damn do JD have some power. To hit that ball, that far, that high, to that part of the ballpark, is amazing. What a huge pick up. How many opposite field homers is that for him?
  9. Come on. Don't fall asleep in the offense department guys.
  10. More runs would have been fantastic. Bautista and EE are just struggling this year horribly. Normally they'd select pitches better and in this case Jose would at least have gotten a hit, maybe.
  11. Damn it. Get a hit from Goins and still can't score. Team seems cursed. Come on, Reyes! Cash the runner(s) in!
  12. They need to cash in the run on 3rd in this situation. After yesterday's disaster of leaving so many men on and squandering so many chances, they need to pounce here.
  13. At least Colabello is still swinging the bat well. Gives us a nice shot to at least tie it, if not cash in a couple more run. And now time to take on the pen.
