Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I wouldn't be against the Jays giving up some talent if the return (mostly pitching) is under control for a few years. The Jays are kind of in a must win now year since MB is a FA, Dickey can be bought out, and the $12M he would cost could pick up a back end rotation guy who's 10 years younger and could put up similar or better numbers, so 2 of our vets and inning eaters will be gone. If a trade brings in a starter who can help the team win now plus stick around for a couple of years it would be the best case unless the Jays decide to go with the young pitchers, try to sign guys on the FA market (which wouldn't be easy if they had a chance to win a division and didn't at least try something other than bring up a AAAA player), or whatever. I don't like the idea of burning the farm for rentals or huge contracts that might handcuff the team later. I'm sure AA could play his cards right and pick up at least an arm for the pen and rotation. The pen might be more difficult since we'd be after a legit closer or someone who's more capable of coming in late (8th-9th) and close the door especially since Osuna can't pitch two inning saves every time out.
The good news is if the Jays do pick up some players there is some money coming off the books. They even have cheap options on EE and Bautista. Problem is Martin and Reyes' contracts jump up to $20M or a bit more in Reyes' case so that's going to hurt the Jays a bit unless ownership keeps the payroll about where it is. If they manage to win that money might go up.
I just have this feeling that if they don't get it this year, they might throw their arms up, say they've tried in that 3 year window, and then just run out the young pitchers and try a rebuild, blow it up, and we're back to square one like we've seen before. That being said I don't like the idea of selling the farm for players who aren't going to be under control for more than the rest of this year.
You have to pay the price of business but the Jays just need some decent pitching. An ace or a solid #2 would be great, but someone who can eat innings, save the pen, give the Jays a chance to win with our offence, who is a lock for his starts, preferably a ground ball pitcher or someone who doesn't give up too many homers, and he might come cheaper this year and possibly next to resign. Having a true, shutdown ace would be great, especially if it's a Wild Card game, but if the Jays pitching just pitches decently and the offense can score, they should be fine if they can get another shutdown arm in the pen.
Then again I might have no idea what I'm talking about
