Blue Jays unveil 2015 Opening Day 25-Man Roster
JaysFan4Ever replied to TwistedLogic's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
I'm assuming it is due to Goins having options left and Tolly being able to hit a bit better. But with Valencia it doesn't make sense to have another RHB with limited defense while we could have Goins who brings another LHB along with great defense and the ability to back up short. -
Blue Jays unveil 2015 Opening Day 25-Man Roster
JaysFan4Ever replied to TwistedLogic's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
Short term this might work out if they think Saunders will be back when they're projecting (I wouldn't hold my breath on that) but then we'd still would need a 4th OF. I like Tolly but Goins would just make sense as a defensive replacement/SS replacement kind of deal. If/when Reyes goes down who will man the position? Sticking someone out there for a game isn't horrible but any long period of time and we're screwed. Having two (technically 3 with Estrada) long relievers seems redundant but with 2 starters being first year starters it might not be a bad idea to have them to piggy back in case one gets knocked out early. But Hendricks over Drabek? Eh. I'm not a big fan of both Osuna and Castro making the team simply because they're good arms and had good springs. I know our options were/are limited but as many have said at least one should be starting, if not both, down in the minors. I don't mind Travis making the team especially over the other options. The kid raked in ST and he deserves a shot especially with the other guys they'd stick out there. Run him out there until he proves that he's not ready and hopefully that won't happen. -
He's a good young arm. I don't see him as an ace, but a solid starter moving forward. As the article said, and as a few said over at the Jays' official site, they're also playing the stats game; trying to balance guys where they've had their best success eg keep MB out of Yankee stadium where he pretty much sucked and giving Drew starts in Yankee Stadium and Baltimore where he did pretty well, especially owning Baltimore last year. It seemed like once Macier and Saunders were heading to the DL that Travis and Pillar, respectively, were going to win the jobs. I'm excited to see what Travis can do. The roster was pretty much set at that point except the pen. I'm a bit anxious to see how it unfolds. I was a bit against the idea of having them keep both Redmond and Hendricks in the pen but since we're having younger starters (2 who've never pitched a full season in the bigs) it gives some extra insurance or piggy backing. I just hope they don't screw up starting depth by putting guys in the pen who should be down in the minors getting stretched out and on the roster earlier than they should be for the arbitration and FA clocks to start ie Osuna. It should be fun to watch and see how the kids do since it's going to be sink or swim with the talent they have. There really isn't any back up plan(s) right now.
-
I didn't really see this one coming but kind of did if that makes sense. I would have thought they'd try to move him at least for a PTBNL and/or cash rather than waivers but they had a choice to make. I though he'd break camp and maybe after failing try to send him down kind of like what they did with Percy.
-
Just goes to show how somethings work out....or don't.

Delabar sent down while Hendricks, who has never shown any success in the big leagues still has a roster spot? I can understand they have some good young pitchers who have been pitching very well in so far and some guys out of options like Drabek that you don't want to just give up on, but it's a big of a shock he was sent down. Not nearly as shocking as some moves but he was off to a good spring. I don't buy that about needing a one inning guy thing. With the young starters, how the pen could implode at any time, you'd think having maybe 2 long relievers would be better. I'd say milk Delbar for all he has left before adding young guys to the roster and starting the FA & Arbitration clocks along with burning an option if they don't keep up pace and show they're not ready for the bigs. The good news is once they put Stroman on the 60 DL and probably put one or two guys on waivers, they'll be some open spots to hopefully add guys to. I'm worried about the bench depth and especially at SS. Lack of depth seems to have killed this team in years past.

I wonder if the same people who came up with this idea ran one for the Yankees or the Mets and had one of those huge subway rats flash for a few seconds.
-
They're not even trying anymore are they? A f***ing moose? Really? The sad thing is they could have used the message/catchphrase to their advantage but like everything they executed it so poorly there's no point in putting up what they did.
-
Wow! 60% That's probably going to require more surgery/a replacement in the future. I wonder how he'll be able to play and his range after this. 4-6 weeks is normal after a tear, I had a couple of tears repaired in the winter years ago and was able to run after about 4 weeks (more like jogging since I had a back injury too) so maybe 6 weeks but still that's a huge chunk to miss. I Think they still should play it as he won't be back for a longer period of time so grab someone who can hold the fort or be as good. That's just a lot to have removed. I'm not a doctor. I'm sure their doctors know what they're talking about and I hope there isn't spin on this to be better news than it is but I'd still wouldn't bet on a quick return and him being the guy with the same speed and range as he used to. I could be wrong. I hope so but that's a large amount to be missing.

Papelbon would accept trade to Jays
JaysFan4Ever replied to jaysfan2014's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
It wouldn't surprise me if this winds up being a ST or end thereof kind of trade. Unless they want Navarro straight up or some low level prospect, I don't know what AA would have to give away without an overpay and we don't need an overpay. As much help as possible would be nice but depending on the cost in terms of dollars and potential players moved, I'd rather go with what we have, hoping a guy like Delabar comes back to form, or is at least average, one of the waiver pick ups or minor league deals pans out for a little bit ie West. -
There's probably some opt out clause in there anyway that if he's not on the roster by some date he becomes a FA again. It's a minor league deal and they're never a bad thing. Worse case he doesn't work out best case maybe he has something left in the tank and helps the Jays and eats some innings either as a starter, swing man, reliever. Maybe he'll surprise everyone and give at least some good appearances at the MLB level. Get something out of him. Certainly isn't the worst person to bring into camp and see what he can offer either in ST or maybe after sometime in Buffalo.
-
I'd have to agree with that. Especially coming off his knee injury, an odd one, we have no idea what to expect. Someone has to back up SS if not for the sole reason of having a back up (we know Reyes will need a day off or extra innings or some reason) so who knows if he can even play 2nd and if he can't hold his own there no point in trying him at SS. Might as well run me out there. It's one reason why Goins, despite the lack of a bat, seems alluring since he can play both spots. If his range is an issue might as well cut him lose before the end of ST and just move on.
-
I'm sure he gets a look (maybe a little longer than someone in his position would) because of his guaranteed contract, but I think (hope) they go with the best candidate for the starting job whomever it might be. He might not be bad for a back up role, and might wind up there due to the fact they're paying him $3M, but there's a chance they could always cut him lose or try sending him to some team desperate for depth. He could put up an OK (and by OK that means marginally better than what he's done for this team since signing which isn't hard to top since he missed a year) year or winds up released if they opt to go with someone else. Personally, after his season two years ago, missing a year with a serious knee injury, and not knowing what, if anything, can be expected from him, he's on the outside looking in. But this team seems to have a habit of taking players out of options or who are owed money over better players so we'll see. Maybe they'll give him a month to see what he can do either as the starter or a back up before letting him go, or shoving him to the bench if Travis is ready. If he can field adequately and hit at least for a few weeks in ST and the season he might stick long enough until the back and forth begins again.

BlueJays not in on K-Rod, Soriano or Chamberlain
JaysFan4Ever replied to Angrioter's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
I wouldn't mind giving K-Rod a shot but he must be asking for some serious money or years. I still wish they would add to the pen and possibly rotation and not just the AAAA bounce around guys to be safe. Hopefully the rotation holds. MB and RA seem to be locks for 200IP and solid while the younger guys look like they could hold their own and we have a few we could use. The deeper the starters go the less strain on the pen. Hopefully, like mentioned, a waiver claim works out, someone has a good year for use, Delabar somehow corrects what his problem(s) and can be dominate again. As long as everyone does their job and doesn't fall apart they can be fine. A bonafide closer would be great but so would a true #1. They're not available right now or they're waiting them out for them to sign for next to nothing (relatively speaking) since ST is days away. Time will tell. I think they're going to use Sanchez as a RP if not closer (at times) this year since he was great last year then maybe transition him back to a starter if next year a better RP comes along. -
I kind of had the feeling the Jays would win against him if not for any reason than he's a super 2. Not sure why I had that as a feeling. But hopefully everyone is professional about it and moves on. I see it more of a motivating factor for him to go out, have a good year, cash in in the offseason. I'd imagine if he has (or is having) another great year, especially with Bautista and Edwin hitting with him, they might try and get a multi year deal with him. See what he can do first hand, in his new home. Let him get acclimated. Let him get used to playing with his new team and see how it goes. Then if it's another great season talk buying out arbitration and/or FA years. As for Romero. I know he probably is going to come in hoping to be healthy and prove he's worth another shot in the bigs to someone. If not he'll be waiting for the season to end and hopefully wind up in another organization where he might get a shot to reach the bigs again. I know he's had a few injuries but I feel for him. he fell and fell hard. Just for his sake I hope he can wind up at least having a decent year in AAA or wind up being moved sometime during the year to get a fresh start so he can attempt to get another shot. It won't be here unless he really explodes out of ST, in Buffalo and someone goes down with an injury.

Report: Tigers have discussed Blue Jays' Navarro
JaysFan4Ever replied to JaysFan4Ever's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
I'm with you on that one. If it's a straight dump, keep him, sign someone. If it's a trade either get someone useful back, even if it's a prospect, but something that can help the team. Navarro as a DH/Backup Catcher/PH is better than him playing elsewhere to save some money or getting s*** in return. I doubt Detroit will get desperate and give away too much along with taking on his full salary. -
Sorry if it's been posted. Seems like a slow day. I've just gotten online after shoveling snow all day. Probably nothing going to happen since they'd either send a crap pitcher in return especially for eating some of the salary. Maybe this is the desperate team that AA ninja skills can come to work with and net something useful. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2015/02/09/detroit-tigers-dioner-navarro/23127467/

State of the Franchise tomorrow
JaysFan4Ever replied to CrackerJack's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
First arbitration hearing in 18 years and the Jays lose it. Hopefully they'll get a multi year deal worked out with Josh Donaldson a la Bautista a few years ago when it went down to the wire. -
Unless he winds up back on the team I wouldn't worry about him costing us wins. I think he's peaked. He's still young baseball speaking but I think what you see is what you get at this point with him. Who knows? Maybe the Os give him a FT job and he takes off maybe he just stays what he is. It's like every former player who comes back and does anything that costs the team a win or comes up with a big play, it's always a pain.
-
I wouldn't mind CJ back at a cheaper price. Maybe AA is waiting for the asking prices to drop as players get desperate for a job before ST, hopes to luck out and land a proven closer in a trade (maybe with more ie 2B or 4th OF), or he just thinks that everything is in place and guys like some he's claimed off waivers, minor league deals, guys like Delabar bounce back to some solid form. Maybe he's trying to find a better starter out there so shuffle a few things around. Then again can't get everything done and like some have mentioned BPs are unpredictable. One year they're great, the next they suck and they're mostly the same players. I don't want to see AA panic and piss away a few prospects, even low level ones, to bring in a couple MR or overpay for some borderline RP. Either the guys still out there have huge demands or BPs just aren't a huge concern with teams right now. We're getting closer to the reporting times to various teams so I'm willing to bet some moves start to happen within a week or two. It would be great if they could bring someone in who's proven but not going to cost a decent prospect, or someone traded for who isn't better than a Delabar or waiver claim who costs both more dollar wise and cost the team a player. Maybe AA is trying to focus on moving Navarro to someone hoping to get some relief help. As long as our starters can give us quality outings and go deep into games and the guys called upon don't explode I'll be happy. I don't care who the name on the back of the jersey is providing they come in and do their job.
-
Anyone thinking the Jays are trying to work out a multiyear deal with Josh Donaldson? Maybe try buying out some, if not all, of his arbitration years? Maybe using options or something to avoid having his price get too high?
-
Sounds about right.

$19.75 for Price. Damn, wouldn't that be about half of the Rays' payroll? Imagine how much he could make if he comes off another good season.

Blue Jays seeking replacement for Beeston
JaysFan4Ever replied to jerb's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
The sooner this cluster gets done with the better for both clubs. I can't really see AA giving up too much, especially some of the names tossed around, for DD, when he wouldn't give them up for proven MLB player. If it gets worked out, great. If not, oh well. Just sooner the better. It's more tabloid than anything and it gives something to talk about but it would better if one day we log on to see AA completing a deal for some solid reliever(s) or otherwise tweaking the roster. I wouldn't mind DD but look who you're trying to negotiate with plus the contact they'd let him out of so it would take something. You have to give up something to make something but to give up one or more of what's left of our prospects, especially younger pitchers, when they might be needed especially with the contracts of MN, RAD being up, and no guarantee the Jays will be able to sign someone to replace them it seems risky. Baltimore will try to bend AA over a barrel and I hope he says no, and maybe they talk during the season or next year or find someone else who has some skills but won't cost them an arm and a leg. Then again this is mostly speculation by many people at this point so it's just that. -
