  1. Jack Morris: "This isn't Major League Baseball right now." Awful game.
  2. As little time as we may have for J.P.'s catching skills, it is tough to blame him for having the big head. This comes down to front office mismanagement. They should have recognised J.P. would likely be a drag on the team, and make it clear that he would be competing with another catcher. Competition is good. There was really no need to trade away Buck if they had taken that approach. But, the FO being the FO, they gave J.P. the cushy throne treatment, as they seem to do with most players.
  3. It makes for an interesting contrast, going by all accounts: Nolin is physically rusty, but has faced the true bats; Stroman should be physically strong, but has mostly faced the soft bats of spring.
  4. I don't know about that. It started with the Marlins trade, which by AA's own admission started out as a small deal and snowballed into something else. So presumably he went to Beeston for the OK to take on the extra payroll, and our destiny was shaped by that transaction. It's also worth noting that AA never went into Tank Nation mode, such as the Astros (or even the Rays) to stockpile high draft picks, nor did he trade off any of our high value players -- other than Halladay who wished to leave. He maintained a competitive team over the past few seasons, in part to get extra draft picks, but also having a roster that was primed to compete with a single blockbuster trade.
  5. Interesting. Perhaps there was an argument to be made against going all-in this year on the basis of our injuries. With Hutchison and Drabek out until June, and the farm lacking any ready-now prospects, any challenge was going to hinge on a healthy roster. The margin for error was minimal.
  6. The Rogers people and Beeston appear to have done their jobs just fine: a $120m payroll, strong marketing of the team, stadium upgrades, the promise of grass etc. The buck stops with AA. He has been given plenty of freedom, time and resources by upper management. Whether it's the handling of Snider, the new uniforms, the bolstering and restructuring of the scouting system, high ticket signings, extensions, or the state of the farm ... everything about this organisation has AA's fingerprints on it.
  7. Another vote for the continuation of the PGT.
  8. There was a particularly good troll last season who managed to get Wilner to talk, in detail, about the physiques of players. It took Wilner a good couple of minutes to catch on. Sadly, they cut the call from the catch-up recording on the website.
  9. There's no use in blaming the umpire. The Jays should not have started Ortiz, and Arencibia should not have been batting fifth. If the Jays optimised their chance of winning and then the ump cost them the game, that would be a different story. As things stand, the Jays continue to self-sabotage.
  10. Gotta feel for Rick. Is nobody in the Jays organisation capable of identifying and fixing his issue? It gives me cause for concern about the quality of the coaching staff and their development of the prospects.
  11. The Cito incident was Wilner at his most hubristic. Everybody knew that Cito was dense at in-game management, but the transcript clearly showed Wilner tried to humiliate the man in the press conference. He hounded him to produce statistics that every reporter in the room knew he didn't have. His ego got away from him as usual, but it was nice to see it collared for once.
  12. Unsurprising. For all his guff about wanting rational and reasonable discussion, he is more concerned with 'winning' an argument. Anybody with a keen eye for logic can see the twisting fallacies he commits. I've never understood any reverence for the man -- he's disingenuous.
  13. Typical one-upsmanship and sleight-of-hand from Wilner. That is a slippery, fringy statistic at best; and I doubt Wilner would a) have Arencibia 5th in the order or have bet on Arencibia being productive in that spot. Inform and educate your listeners, Mike, instead of scoring cheap points.
  14. Self-harming politeness from the organisation. Although he should be commended for his emergency starts, everybody knew that Ortiz was a timebomb ... probably even Ortiz himself. Jenkins may not be the sharpest stud, but at least he could have some kind of future up top.
  15. Quite right. As much as Arencibia bites (and he does bite), Gibbons must take his fair share of blame there. Bases loaded thanks to a legitimate top order, but f***ed thanks to a man who will only negate that group.
  16. It was spiriting to hear Jack Morris call out Arencibia on the radio: "If you don't take walks, word will get around the league; they won't throw you strikes." Spot on, sir.
