I think there has to be an attempt to turn a double play, Lawrie clearly took the ball and stepped off the bag, not even attempting a throw. It's probably one of those "umpire's discretion" sort of things.

It's basically to keep the "neighbourhood play" unofficially on the books, trying to keep fielders safe from guys trying to bowl the over to break up the double play... That's how I understand the rule anyway.

It can't be reviewed when it's the first half of an attempted double play. Since he made no attempt to throw to first, it was a reviewable play.

I think you're a bit optimistic on Pillar, and maybe a bit down on Gose with those projections. I don't see Pillar putting up an .800 OPS even in split duty, nor do I see Gose OBPing only .300 if he faces righties exclusively, conversely .400 SLG might be a bit much from him...
