Yep, trade Navarro, use that money to keep Lind, who would probably be the best hitter on this team right now (from the left side, which is the much weaker side for us.)

One is too early to make any sort of call on (and I'd still make that trade, frankly), the other was an awful trade the second it was completed.

I still do that trade. The injury sucks, but it was a fluke. 2 years of Saunders is worth 1 year of Happ.

I don't think you'll see a situation where umpires will quit en masse rather than deal with earpieces. They'll complain, that's all they ever do, but it's not like they have a skill-set that is useful anywhere else (or anywhere at all for that matter...) I would love to see the game entirely automated at some point in the future. The technology likely isn't there yet, so that won't happen in my lifetime... The technology *IS* there to call balls and strikes accurately, and most importantly, consistently.

I would totally love the stat to be WAUS. Let's make that happen... Also, can we understand that just because the stat has the word "WINS" in it, it does not necessarily reflect on the exact number of team wins? It's a stat, just like say... OPS or OBA are stats. The point of the stat is that someone with a lower WAR is a worse player, just like someone with a lower OPS is a worse player, though WAR attempts to combine all (relevant) stats to give an overall value of contribution, rather than just looking at offence or defence or pitching. The argument that "the team won while Sanchez was pitching, therefore WAR is wrong" is just as silly as saying a guy with a .100 AVG was a great player, because every hit he got all season drove in the winning run. You look at the stat (.100 AVG, in this case) and go "yeah, overall that's a s***** player despite the incidental contributions he has made in a few places..." The fact that WAR looks at the complete package of a player is the only reason Goins is "pretty bad and probably shouldn't have a roster spot" rather than "HOLY GOD, HOW IS THIS MAN NOT FLIPPING BURGERS FOR A LIVING", which is what you would get if you just looked at his offensive stats.

They could do that (which would require constant tweaking, but that's not really that difficult to manage), or since there's never been any actual relationship between the actual "strike zone rule" and what umpires call, they could amend the rule to simply be "from 8" off the ground to 20" off the ground" (pulling numbers out of my ass), this would, of course, mean taller players had a bit of an edge compared to what they have now, and Pedroia might have to swing at balls 16" over his ugly, midget head, but y'know...

The obviously incredibly exaggerated worst case scenario I usually cite is "what if the umps had decided that Joe Carter's 1993 homer was foul?" If the 4 of them had all agreed that it was foul there was nothing (at the time) that the Jays could have done to overrule them, and a seminal part of Jays history would have been lost because umps are bad. Would it still feel pure had that happened? I don't like a system in which a mistake like that, however unlikely, COULD decide the outcome of a game. Borderline strikes aren't as severe, but they still have an impact on the game.

He will have a low WAR because he pitched poorly. You're not exactly helping your argument with this "he pitched like s*** but luck so he was good and WAR doesn't matter" stance.
