Brendan McKay RIP... it's truly incredible what this kid's been through...
Sept. 10: LHP Brendan McKay (elbow) recalled from Triple-A Durham, placed on 15-day injured list
McKay will undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, on the damage to the UCL in his left elbow that he sustained during Durham’s Aug. 26 game. He will then begin his rehab process at Tropicana Field with the Rays’ medical staff, with the goal to return to pitching in 2024.
The No. 4 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, McKay has not thrown a big league pitch since his debut season in ’19 due to an unfortunate run of major injuries. The 26-year-old, who is on Tampa Bay’s 40-man roster, has needed surgery on a torn labrum in his left shoulder, thoracic outlet syndrome decompression surgery and now Tommy John surgery in consecutive years.
“Look, you feel for him. It’s tough,” said manager Kevin Cash on Saturday. “It’s not gone the way Brendan or we were hoping. Hopefully, he has some good fortune, some good luck moving forward and gets back on our mound.”
