He last faced Toronto on Aug. 17 in New York, striking out 12 but permitting seven runs on nine hits over six innings. The big blow was Melvin Upton Jr.'s three-run homer. Jays Line-up... 1. Kevin Pillar ® CF On the bump... Marcus Stroman RHP Stroman is 0-4 this month, but a lack of run support has been a major reason why. Toronto's Opening Day starter allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of those outings. Game Notes The Yankees' playoff hopes are dwindling, but a momentum-building win in Toronto could swing the tide forward. After dropping Friday's series opener to the American League Wild Card-leading Blue Jays, New York enters Saturday's contest four games back of the Tigers for the second Wild Card spot and five games back of Toronto. Despite dropping seven of its past nine games, the team has remained fixated on winning one game at a time to stay in the race. "You can't predict what the other teams are going to do," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You have to think about what you have to do. The bottom line is you have to win. You have to win today." On the mound for New York will be left-hander CC Sabathia. The 36-year-old has pitched to a 3.38 ERA in September and has put up his best statistical season since 2012. "You felt if you could keep the knee under control, he could pitch pretty well and that's what he's done," Girardi said. On the other side, the Blue Jays will look to keep sole possession of the top Wild Card spot. Toronto will turn to Marcus Stroman, who has pitched relatively well in the second half despite coming away with little to show for it. The 25-year-old has lost his last four starts despite allowing three earned runs or fewer in each of those outings. Included in that stretch is a 2-0 loss to the Yankees, in which the right-hander allowed just two runs over five innings. A native of Medford, N.Y., Stroman has gone 5-2 with a 2.53 ERA against the Yankees in seven career starts. Things to know about this game • Outfielder Brett Gardner is among a small group of Yankees batters with success against Stroman. Gardner has produced an OPS of .886 with two home runs and five RBIs in 20 at-bats against the young righty. • Expect Melvin Upton Jr. to be in the lineup for the Blue Jays against Sabathia. Upton has hit .279 against lefties this season and has gone 17-for-59 (.288) with four home runs in his career against Sabathia. • Girardi started Gary Sanchez at designated hitter on Friday, but the star rookie is expected to return to catcher Saturday.
