"He would show up late for practices and games, and whenever he made a mistake he was quick to blame someone else. Pompey was an exceptionally talented player from a very young age; baseball had always come easily to him. But when he reached a point that his attitude was getting in the way of his ability, he knew he had to make a change.
“I was stupid. I was immature. I made mistakes,” Pompey says. “I stopped working hard—I thought I was all talent. And then people started to pass me and that was a big eye-opener for me. I had to grow up. I had to take responsibility for my career and be accountable for things.”
