What’s hard to decipher there? Didn’t you pass some kind of complex exam? When if not a playoff team, why not use up an extra $20-30 million or something to the payroll if it can win you more games and put a better product on the field

There’s not really much motivation at all to tank in mlb. #12 probably has probably gotten similar historical value to #5. Why put a terrible team on the field and risk losing more casuals and having to try to win them back later on. Again, s***** teams also are going to take a hit in franchise value. Never really got the PIT/FL model other than basically the owner was running it purely to put money in their pocket

If the Jays suddenly decided they were less worried about the bottom line and ok’d a $300m payroll, I think you’d see things would change a little. GMs of any business are going to operate according to their budget

Of course buying FA isn’t going to win anything on its own. I don’t think anyone is suggesting if you have a $300m payroll that you don’t need to internally develop player…and retain the ones you have.. The 10 year contracts you’re pointing out that were bad, and most of other ones, are still getting signed. The market has been established. I get being a purist and turning your nose to that. It’s like a movie snob and then these Marvel movies come along

Listen, there’s no debate money doesn’t always buy you a good team. But like what good prospects did Detroit trade that are very regrettable? What damage was done trying? What happened was they made all the wrong moves and wasted time. If some of these prospects work out for them, I’m sure they’ll be spending again. It comes down to a team like the Jays wants to run it as a business. Other owners just treat it as a trophy asset. Like do you want to go to the yacht club is you’re a mega billionaire and have your snooty friends troll you that the Padres suck

Owners have seen what, 400%-500% increase in franchise value the last 10 years. The good teams more. Just because generating excitement for the Jays didn’t work because ownership was only willing to dip their toe in the water one year, doesn’t mean you should begrudge a franchise like SD, who has probably greatly increased the value of the team with the moves they’ve made

As I said the other day, what can change is ownership. We saw it in NY and Bos.

You need to think a little deeper than this though. The owners seem very committed. Sure, if the teams suck and fade away, and playoffs are no longer sustainable, you would retool or rebuild. But there’s no harm in trying because whenever they’re ready to roll, the money will be there. Dead weight isn’t going to stop anything. To a team like the Jays, what’s on the books can dictate everything. There’s little to lose in going for it if you’re willing to take on the financial risk. They’re not dumb bro.
