Report: Jose Reyes arrested for domestic abuse
IBTrini replied to ValiantJaysFan's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
Yeppp, he was the least likely person I would have thought would do something like this. Anyway, he is supposed to be presumed innocent til a guilty verdict is handed down. If he is found guilty, would he be able to play any games in Canada when his team comes here? Would he be inadmissible? Not that it matters to me, just curious. -
Without rehashing past views/debates on those trades which were discussed to death - The price paid was high but at the time Reyes was seen as a speedy, lead-off, switch-hitting SS which filled a hole in the lineup - they had other motives as well but that was all icing on the cake. Buehrle was a good innings eater which the Jays also needed at the time. To top all this off most baseball media type were literally saying at the time the Jays would win - remember what the goal is for baseball teams - event though the price was high. It is true Martin is pushing on in age but just who do you think the Jays could have gotten who could have performed at his level? It is a lot harder to accumulate quality players than you make it out to be. Anyway, the cries from this message board alone to replace the big defensive hole behind the plate was almost deafening so you cannot have your cake and eat it. I am not a Dickey fan (I can never relax while taking in a game with him on the mound) however age and his style of pitching should not come into play unless you are trying to force a pattern. Sometimes commonality does not equate to a trend, it is just a coincidence. True, there is no evidence to suggest he'd scale back and trade vets to get younger so anything said after this is moot. I still feel Anthopoulos has a smart baseball mind so I will assume he was not blind to your concerns (since it would have eventually become his concern) and would have been thinking of ways to capitalize on that situation.
-
If you view the "all-in" as the whole plan, the be all and end all, then it isn't much of a plan but that means you are short-changing Anthopoulos' vision. Winning the WS should be a major part of planning so sometimes you need to choose the time to make big, decisive moves. Putting a contender on the field for the fans is another huge part of the plan - it ignites the passions of the fans and brings the city, and country, together in a common cause. This also increases revenue streams through increased attendance, viewership etc. With that said, if you think Anthopoulos is not capable of assessing the current and future situation then it is better if he is not here but I do not believe that to be the case. I guess with him gone there is no way to see what would have been his moves going forward. If there is one thing I am sure of is Anthopoulos' unpredictability - just when you think you can see all of his possible options he comes up with something unbelievably out of the blue.
-
I cannot argue against those loopholes no longer being available but Anthopoulos was smart enough to see the situation for what it was and capitalized on it. I believe he has a keen mind and with his compliments of scouts/other team members I feel his choices would have been solid. Once again my perspective on Anthopoulos' skills cannot be verified so I will just leave it as it is. I understand you see it differently and I respect that. I just feel nervous going forward cuz the plan was clear to Anthopoulos so Shapiro stands a good chance of mucking it up - but I could be wrong.
-
Seems like we have different opinions however I feel Anthopoulos is smart enough to see the situation for what it is and I would have had faith in his ability to trade away his aging assets for a nice haul when the time was right. Anyway, I really hope Shapiro knows what he is doing cuz I feel he does not have Anthopoulos' ninja trading skills and he will surely need to be crafty going forward.
-
I don't think it was the money either. I think it had more to do with Anthopoulos' conceived working relationship with Shapiro. Anthopoulos was able to rebuild the farm twice and got the elite players currently on the team based on solid scouting knowledge (including input and feedback from those around him) of those player and his ability to instigate trades where they didn't appear possible. Anthopoulos was given a lot of leeway previously to pursue any player he felt could make a positive impact on the team while utilizing all possible resources including having Beeston's blessing to support his moves/strategy. I believe Shapiro essentially told Anthopoulos that he wanted to be involved in that side which would typically tie his hands since he no longer would be working in a vacuum and that he would have to pass everything though him first including the trading of farm hands. Shapiro's comment that no-one has complete autonomy surely sent the message that those days were long gone. If you have a weak GM then I can see this type of strategy being beneficial however this was not the case in Toronto. Shapiro should have left Anthopoulos' role as it was and kept to the "President's" role.

One good trade??? Really???

I believe a poll was done - do you have a link cuz I did not feel it was that high.
-
Gibbons is sooo bottom of the chain in the pecking order right now.
-
If this is accurate then it looks like this guy is not mincing words nor letting his thoughts be known. Looks like an even bigger shakeup is about to happen.

This news took me completely by surprise so I am a tad shook up at the moment. To say people are not even thinking about why AA would decline is not true at all. Maybe they are not jumping to conclusions like some other individuals are doing on here. At this time no one know what was put forward so to say you are glad he left based on your assumption that they did not agree on some modern way of analysing the game is weird. Maybe I missed that article and I am thinking of different scenarios for the declined offer without having the facts as well. If Anthopoulos was told that he would not have the autonomy (which allowed him to be successful) he enjoyed previously then I can see that coming into play. If he was told he would need to pass along any and all information before talking to any other GM then essentially he was told his hands would be tied. Since I do not have all of the facts I cannot look to find fault with any of the parties involved but I sure feel the organization just took a big blow with this one. People are definitely thinking about valid reasons which would make Anthopoulos decline and are hoping to get additional information about it. Somehow I do not think the fan base will ever get to the bottom of this one which is sad to say the least. I may be wrong but I think Anthopoulos is good at his job and was now starting to hit his stride. Anyway, I do wish him the very best wherever he ends up.

cuz... cuz... cuz the Royals had more chemistry?
-
True, a 1-year option does not seem to be a possibility. They most probably have had talks together over the past couple of months while discussing their views and expectations going forward. Anthopoulos is in a good position right now, he loves the organization and the city, so barring any currently unknown financial/FO advancement opportunities he may be interested in pursuing, he is in line for a long-termed contract.
-
I do not know much about Shapiro's ego but I am sure he wants to create a positive impact especially in his first year with the BlueJays. Shapiro does not seem afraid to shy away from looking at big deals and he also see the value behind making team-friendly contract extensions which he has done in the past. Anthopoulos thinks along those same lines as well so hopefully, right off the bat, they share some common ground. Most people can see Anthopoulos' growth as a GM especially since he seems to learn from past decisions. He has confidence in his ability and is not afraid to change his approach when warranted as new information is presented. His philosophy with respect to being open to suggestions and recommendations from all sources should not cause any issues with Shapiro (especially as he most probably will want to have his ideas looked at as well) cuz, bottom line, they both want the same thing - success. As long as Anthopoulos keeps his "bulldog mentality" with respect to trade talks with other GMs (never letting "no" get in the way of a good trade) and keeps performing well, it should be a compatible meeting of minds. Hopefully Anthopoulos' and Shapiro's working relationship can be a close fit.

One way is the "horse shoes". Can't believe it starts off with an error to score an inside-the-parker. -
World Series Thread: New York Mets vs Kansas City Royals

Won't have any baseball to look at over the next few months so I will be watching this. I am rooting for the Mets mores cuz of the "douchie" attitude of a few of the Royals displayed. -
Cheers to the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays

If you really have to ask this question then you have not been around GDTs often. Anyway, the decision went to NY and apparently they have a lot more camera angles they can review. It's either they saw one angle where it definitely was going to be a HR or there weren't any angles which would be significant enough to override the decision on the field. What was a tad more infuriating, at least to me, was the strike call on Revere even though you cannot say for sure the outcome would have been different if it was called a ball. With 2 on and 0 outs and in a 3-1 count you have a slight advantage cuz the pitcher does not want to have a bases-loaded situation with thunder (Donaldson), lightening (Bautista), and a tsunami (Encarnacion) in clear sight. The botched call put the hitter at a disadvantage as he had to swing, and protect the plate, at a less than ideal pitch. Anyway, that's just my take on it. The Jays brought a lot of excitement and pride to their fans and for that I am grateful. It is true the fan turnout most probably has a trickle-through effect to revenue - advertising etc. - however I am not holding my breath on a big salary jump. The Jays may decide to take another kick at the can with their stars on 2016 but they will be expensive and aging after that. Tough decisions are going to be made this off-season for sure and I am glad I am not the one who has to do it. -
