Good pitchers tend to linger much longer than good hitters, in my experience. I got Lackey in the PL between Yasmani Tomas and Jhonny Peralta. That's a top 25 starter. I took my first SP in round 6 and ended up with a quite good staff.
Because you get far more bang for your buck by taking pitchers late.
Examples: John Lackey, Brandon McCarthy, Collin McHugh, Phil Hughes, Mike Fiers, Jose Fernandez will all provide solid #2 numbers at a very reduced draft price.
Well, if you dont want to use projections (which would actually help you argument) both Saunders and Martin were extremely better than Reyes:
Saunders: 126 wRC+
Martin: 140 wRC+
Reyes: 102 wRC+
Projections have them closer. You could put Reyes ahead without a drop but they are all comparable.
