All I can say is wow, Alex made a really shrewd deal. My initial thought when I saw the proposed deal with Graveman and Lawrie was, "Which of Sanchez or Norris are going with them?".
For the life of me I can't understand how there was meaningful trade discussion between Beane and Alex regarding Donaldson that didn't include Stroman, Sanchez, Norris or Hutchison. Also, does Oakland put any emphasis on club control? It sure as hell doesn't seem like it based on their recent run of form.
I'm going to go hockey here for a minute and bring up the Phaneuf deal because this is exactly what it feels like. Calgary traded Phaneuf to Toronto because Toronto came calling and supposedly blew them away with the amount of players they were willing to include in the deal. Had Billy stepped back for a minute and talked with other teams regarding Donaldson, I don't think it's crazy to assume that by the end of the day Lawrie would've looked much less enticing as the centerpiece of the deal.
Now on the flip side, if Donaldson becomes a weakened version of the guy we saw in Oakland, I sure as hell won't be surprised. That's usually what happens here in Toronto.
