In regards to Yelich, I truly hope that Shatkins are a player for his services. He's already got five MLB seasons to his name, and eight days ago he just turned 26. It's reasonable to assume that he hasn't hit his peak yet and is entering his prime years. Steamer has him projected for roughly 4 WAR next season, and his contract is ludicrously team friendly, with five more years of team control remaining. Despite the weak returns for Stanton and Ozuna, as well as the possible ineptitude of the Miami FO, the Yelich situation is very different than those of the other two, and the Marlins are likely to demand a pretty hefty package.
If Yelich wants out of Miami and they put him on the trade block, a potential trade with the Jays probably looks something like this:
Bo Bichette - Our second best prospect, and quite possibly a top 25 prospect in all of baseball. Plays a solid SS, which makes him that much more enticing in trade. We will not get Yelich without including one of Vlad or Bo, unfortunately; it's the reality of the situation.
Teoscar Hernandez - He may appeal to the Marlins because he's got upside, is young, is MLB-ready now, and is a pretty nice little replacement for Yelich in their lineup. Maybe the Marlins prefer Anthony Alford, though.
TJ Zeuch - He had a pretty good AFL for Peoria, and recency bias dictates that he'll be a bit of a "helium" guy. The Marlins, even though they're not a real team, hopefully had at least a couple of scouts in attendance in Arizona. If they liked what they saw, Zeuch is a nice guy to include in this deal because his ceiling is probably not as high as, say, Pearson's.
Joshua Palacios - A top 30 org prospect with some tools and appeal. He's a project, but he was a "buzzy" prospect in the system at this time last year.
That package in itself is not enough to overcome the sheer surplus value that Yelich's contract provides, so if we agree to take on a big contract like Chen's, now we're in business. The Marlins are in a very unenviable position, and, honestly, the Blue Jays need to exploit that while they can.
Please, Shatkins, get it done.
