    Want something even more interesting? I followed up by converting dCorsi into dGD, then determined the differential between dGDwoSH% (SH% and SV% are both league average) and dGDwSH% (Only SV% is league average; player's SH% is multiplied with dCF) which I'll call deltaGD at the moment because I can't think of anything original right now. I got the following for defencemen (>500 TOI): Top 20 (Rank, Name, deltaGD): 1 LETANG, KRIS 4.8 2 VISNOVSKY, LUBOMIR 3.7 3 HEDMAN, VICTOR 3.6 4 GOLIGOSKI, ALEX 2.9 5 KEITH, DUNCAN 2.9 6 CARLE, MATT 2.5 7 CHARA, ZDENO 2.2 8 HAMHUIS, DAN 2.0 9 GREEN, MIKE 2.0 10 GREBESHKOV, DENIS 1.9 11 LIDSTROM, NICKLAS 1.9 12 ROBIDAS, STEPHANE 1.8 13 ENSTROM, TOBIAS 1.5 14 SPACEK, JAROSLAV 1.5 15 RAFALSKI, BRIAN 1.4 16 MONTADOR, STEVE 1.4 17 MEECH, DEREK 1.3 18 FRANSON, CODY 1.3 19 WALLIN, NICLAS 1.3 20 WHITE, IAN 1.3 Bottom 20: 347 SANGUINETTI, BOBBY -0.8 348 JOVANOVSKI, ED -0.8 349 BOYLE, DAN -0.8 350 VAANANEN, OSSI -0.8 351 SEIDENBERG, DENNIS -0.9 352 COLAIACOVO, CARLO -0.9 353 SAUER, KURT -0.9 354 GIRARDI, DAN -1.0 355 BOYCHUK, JOHNNY -1.0 356 GERVAIS, BRUNO -1.0 357 ZIDLICKY, MAREK -1.0 358 BARRIE, TYSON -1.1 359 HUSKINS, KENT -1.3 360 VLASIC, MARC-EDOUARD -1.6 361 WHITNEY, RYAN -1.7 362 MARTINEK, RADEK -1.8 363 KARLSSON, ERIK -1.9 364 BEAUCHEMIN, FRANCOIS -2.1 365 MARTINEZ, ALEC -2.1 366 HAVELID, NICLAS -3.4 And forwards (>500 TOI): Top 20: 1 CROSBY, SIDNEY 16.5 2 SEDIN, HENRIK 11.2 3 SEDIN, DANIEL 9.0 4 OVECHKIN, ALEX 6.7 5 KUNITZ, CHRIS 6.7 6 RYAN, BOBBY 6.4 7 STAMKOS, STEVEN 6.4 8 PERRY, COREY 6.4 9 IVANANS, RAITIS 6.3 10 MALKIN, EVGENI 6.2 11 ST._LOUIS, MARTIN 6.1 12 TOEWS, JONATHAN 5.8 13 GETZLAF, RYAN 5.5 14 HORTON, NATHAN 5.2 15 ADAMS, CRAIG 5.2 16 VORACEK, JAKUB 5.1 17 MOEN, TRAVIS 5.0 18 SPEZZA, JASON 4.9 19 ORR, COLTON 4.6 (LOL) 20 DOWNIE, STEVE 4.4 Bottom 20: 621 JOHANSSON, MARCUS -1.7 622 KENNEDY, TYLER -1.8 623 GIONTA, BRIAN -1.9 624 CLOWE, RYANE -2.0 625 O_REILLY, RYAN -2.0 626 BERTUZZI, TODD -2.0 627 ZAJAC, TRAVIS -2.2 628 WILLIAMS, JUSTIN -2.2 629 BLAKE, JASON -2.3 630 SANTORELLI, MIKE -2.3 631 TOOTOO, JORDIN -2.3 632 HANZAL, MARTIN -2.4 633 RICHARDSON, BRAD -2.5 634 VEILLEUX, STEPHANE -2.5 635 MOSS, DAVID -2.6 636 WINNIK, DANIEL -2.7 637 WANDELL, TOM -3.7 638 HUNTER, TRENT -4.8 639 BERGENHEIM, SEAN -5.7 640 GOMEZ, SCOTT -8.0 What I found interesting, besides Colton Orr being in the top 20 in delta GD, was that there was a wider spread among forwards (Average deltaGD of 0.46) than defencemen (Average deltaGD of 0.08). This could be interpreted as being due to the lower average SH% relative to forwards, which itself is the result of longer shot distances from defencemen.

The way the conferences are set up, it'd be difficult to relocate any team not from the East to Seattle.

I tried to do a similar study last year with Behind the Net's data, but it didn't pass the smell test for me and others I showed the data to. Their QoT stats don't tease out the player's effects on their teammate's Corsi, which Hockey Analysis did do thankfully.

So, since Steve Burtch did his Shutdown Index over at PPP, I expanded on his study by looking at adjusted overall Corsi. Like him, I adjusted for quality of teammates (TMCF/A20), quality of competition (OppCF/A20), and zone starts (he did DZFO% only, while I included NZFO% since it was also significant). Here are the top/bottom forwards and defencemen with this measure (I'm basically calling it dCorsi/20, which is the sum of SDI or dCA/20 and dCF/20). This is an accumulation of all seasons since 2007-08 and a minimum of 2000 minutes total: Forwards: Top 20: 1 WILLIAMS, JUSTIN 2 BERGERON, PATRICE 3 HALL, TAYLOR 4 SEDIN, DANIEL 5 KUNITZ, CHRIS 6 ZHERDEV, NIKOLAI 7 MOSS, DAVID 8 ELIAS, PATRIK 9 PONIKAROVSKY, ALEXEI 10 BERGENHEIM, SEAN 11 GETZLAF, RYAN 12 SEDIN, HENRIK 13 KENNEDY, TYLER 14 PACIORETTY, MAX 15 BOOTH, DAVID 16 HORNQVIST, PATRIC 17 HUNTER, TRENT 18 GRABOVSKI, MIKHAIL 19 EBERLE, JORDAN 20 PERRY, COREY Bottom 20: 367 MARCHANT, TODD 368 ADAMS, CRAIG 369 MILLER, DREW 370 KOBASEW, CHUCK 371 STEWART, CHRIS 372 BOZAK, TYLER 373 BROWN, MIKE 374 PISANI, FERNANDO 375 MOREAU, ETHAN 376 MAYERS, JAMAL 377 DRURY, CHRIS 378 ORR, COLTON 379 FILPPULA, VALTTERI 380 SUTTER, BRANDON 381 BERTUZZI, TODD 382 GLASS, TANNER 383 DRAPER, KRIS 384 KORPIKOSKI, LAURI 385 HANDZUS, MICHAL 386 JOHANSSON, MARCUS Defencemen: 1 CHARA, ZDENO 2 SUBBAN, P.K. 3 WEBER, SHEA 4 HEDMAN, VICTOR 5 SUTER, RYAN 6 VISNOVSKY, LUBOMIR 7 MARTIN, PAUL 8 LETANG, KRIS 9 BYFUGLIEN, DUSTIN 10 MEYER, FREDDY 11 HAMHUIS, DAN 12 COBURN, BRAYDON 13 BOYCHUK, JOHNNY 14 NIEDERMAYER, SCOTT 15 PIETRANGELO, ALEX 16 GOLIGOSKI, ALEX 17 DOUGHTY, DREW 18 GREEN, MIKE 19 RANGER, PAUL 20 PRONGER, CHRIS Bottom 20: 212 ORPIK, BROOKS 213 ERSKINE, JOHN 214 FINGER, JEFF 215 EMINGER, STEVE 216 HANNAN, SCOTT 217 WEBER, MIKE 218 SKRASTINS, KARLIS 219 PECKHAM, THEO 220 MURRAY, DOUGLAS 221 SALVADOR, BRYCE 222 SOPEL, BRENT 223 EATON, MARK 224 MCKEE, JAY 225 SBISA, LUCA 226 WHITNEY, RYAN 227 MARA, PAUL 228 STUART, BRAD 229 JOHNSON, JACK 230 STRUDWICK, JASON 231 HAVELID, NICLAS

New study: Rinne is really f***ing good at controlling rebounds, but he's probably more the exception rather than the norm. Also, Reimer's rebound control was possibly 2nd best behind only Rinne in the past 3 seasons, though he wasn't anywhere close to Rinne (19.8 rGAA vs. 8.7 rGAA). His rebound rate also worsens each season, possibly due to random noise, poorer play, poorer system, or a combination. Eric T gets into a decent discussion with the author in the comment section.

  19. Interesting article from Fangraphs Community Research. Created a new metric called Runner Movement Indicator (RMI), which looks into how batters would do under certain contexts related to RBI situations and whatnot. For instance, how many RsBI would Josh Hamilton get if he was in Miguel Cabrera's situation? The article has the answer to that.

It will probably give teams even less incentive to draft Russian players now as a result of this. If Kovalchuk is leaving for the KHL (if he does), despite the contract he had with NJ, then how the hell do you expect other Russian players who aren't paid as much or aren't as talented as Kovie to stay?

NJ has to give up a draft pick next year that they lost as a result of cap circumvention involved while signing Kovie, when they could have given it up in 2012 when it was the 29th overall pick, and Kovie leaves the year before that season begins. LOL
