I think you are right. The Rangers *think* they are contenders but will likely finish 20 games behind the Astros. Unless deGrom somehow manages to make 25+ starts in which case they might finish 15 games behind. The Padres OTOH might actually win their division -
They have the best top half of a lineup in the majors The bottom half *is* kinda meh

To be fair the Padres have loads of talent Including an absolutely ridiculous 1-4 in the lineup with Tatis, Soto, Bogaerts and Machado in any order This year might be their best chance to actually be better than the Dodgers But it's obviously just not a sustainable model

Interestingly, the team that traded for a highly touted catcher (Murphy/Braves) didn't really need one that badly But yes there several teams who could really benefit from an upgrade at the position. -

AA on MLB Network today Braves made a "solid long term offer to Swanson" but it was "a chunk lower than the Cubs did" This was said after the host pointed out all the below market value deals he had signed others for. AA: "sometimes contract extensions don't work out even if players want to remain a Brave". Gave example of Donaldson. "There's only so much pie to go around" On the Murphy trade he talked to Beane early in the off season and didn't seem like a fit for a trade. Still wanted him so involved a third team because Brewers had a fit. "Catchers don't play 162 so there are lots of at bats to go around" between catcher and DH. D'Arnaud is "excited, he's all in" If he'd had a choice he would have traded for him in another year or two but he had a chance to get him now so he went for it William Contreras' "calling card is his bat". Had to include him in the trade or it wouldn't have happened.
