I just think it's because all Rizzo knows. He fills holes and then for the past 5 years he had no depth when injuries happen. He (or someone in his org) drafts quite well but he's never had a 40 man roster. This year the injuries didn't happen and it led to a championship. It gets him 3 more years at least...and he will likely spend to keep the team relevant. I don't think Howie Kendrick is talked about enough. He put up an offensive career year (and it's not even close) at the age of 36. Almost exactly a third of his PA's against LHP and not having to play everyday obviously kept him fresh. If Vets are coming in cheap, finding the correct ways to allow them to thrive or at least provide their greatest value is what I think smart teams will do. Of course finding the 36 year old that is going to lower his K-rate by 25%, while raising the BB rate is probably never easy to find.
