Maybe he's just the most expendable reliever with options remaining to get a long guy up here? idk. Don't think Estrada can be optioned without Veteran's consent or whatever, Loup is too good, Cecil is too good, would burn an option on Osuna/Castro, Hendriks is out of options, etc

Depends on the money. If there was a few million dollars in difference between projected arb totals with and without Balfour, it might have been worth it to a team like the Rays. As well maybe they thought someone would see "low ERA and savez!!" and give up something ok for him but the low ERA part didn't go so well.

I figured they just wanted him to rack up saves to cut down arb costs. He had an 86 xFIP- in 2013 too. 10.7% SwStr%. Wonder what went wrong.
