Caper Verified Member Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/06/cubs-kris-bryant-nowhere-close-to-deal.html While the majority of first-round picks from this year's draft have agreed to terms or signed, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Cubs and No. 2 overall selection Kris Bryant are "nowhere close to a deal." Bryant and adviser Scott Boras are seeking a bonus greater than the $6.7MM assigned pick value, while the Cubs are hoping to sign him for just over $6MM, according to Heyman. The Cubs could spend as much as $7MM on Bryant without forfeiting draft picks for 2014, but they can also point to the fact that No. 1 pick Mark Appel signed for $6.35MM and No. 3 pick Jonathan Gray signed for $4.8MM. I'm just curious. Aren't the Cubs in the drivers seat here? It's a protected pick, in what I was told was a weak draft. I am going off the assumption that next years draft is deeper. Would a 3 and 5 pick look nice for next years draft? It seems so anyway. I would just put slot on the table and say take it or leave it.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 27, 2013 Author Posted June 27, 2013 They'll sign him. How do you predict breaks? It really seems the Cubs have the upper hand here.
digiblader Verified Member Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 He'd better sign--or he'll be drafted by the Astros or Marlins next year as a top pick most likely after he goes to school for one more year.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Holy wow, next draft could be ridiculous. He'll sign, though, Theo's known to pony up.
flafson Verified Member Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 So if next draft will be so great, maybe we should not sign our number 1 pick?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 So if next draft will be so great, maybe we should not sign our number 1 pick? Isn't a bad idea, honestly.
