    I had a kid give up 17 runs today as the pitcher. I told him I had to keep sending him out there to save my relief pitchers' arms.

    Why do you have to "gas" the pen? Scherzer looked bad from the first pitch. They were crushing him. If you're willing to stretch him to save arms, why can't that same logic be applied to a relief pitcher? Why not bring somebody in who might be able to stop the bleeding, and stretch their innings if needed, if they're effective.

    He does not need to eat innings if he's getting clobbered for 7 runs. The bullpen is rested from the day off. Put somebody that can keep the game competitive. We've scored 6 runs. Scherzer giving up 7 is beating us tonight.

    That's a decent theory, but professional hitters are able to just slap it the opposite way. Against the shift.
