  1. It's all about the meta-game!
  2. Huh. I didn't actually realize he was that tall, jeez.
  3. Cool. I remember reading another article that was in a similar vein not too long ago but I can't recall where. I tried googling it and even though I didn't find it I did find these: Freakonomics in 2012: http://freakonomics.com/2012/11/09/does-the-%E2%80%9Cbest%E2%80%9D-team-win-the-world-series/ Boston magazine in 2013: http://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/blog/2013/10/04/often-best-regular-season-baseball-teams-win/ The Week in 2013: http://theweek.com/articles/459165/may-best-team-not-win-baseballs-winningest-clubs-rarely-win-world-series EDIT: Found it, also from fivethirtyeight in October of this year: http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/mlb-american-league-playoffs-blue-jays-yankees/
  4. Tulo looks like the guy Lawrie picked on in high school.
  5. Why, is he immediately getting dealt to the Pirates?
  6. An interesting explanation for the rising price of relievers: Beyond The Box Score - The Ken Giles trade to the Astros shows the marginal value of closers is being re-evaluated Always gotta keep in mind that counterfactual. Of course it seems like one alternative explanation would be that the intended use of the relievers is changing - perhaps allowing more innings played to increase the value.
  7. Even if the performance elasticity of demand for attendance is quite elastic, if the actual attendance isn't that great then the opportunity cost of sacrificing performance now for sustained performance in the future probably isn't large enough to warrant a shift in the prioritization of the future over the present.

  9. Hardball Times has a really cool article about the unionization of baseball - it's a narrative not an analytical piece (just thought I'd toss it out as forewarning). I had a quick look around but in the first 5 or so pages on the forum this looked to be the most correct place to put it since there doesn't appear to be a "General baseball articles/news not deserving of their own thread" thread. Apologies if this should have been placed elsewhere. Edit: I realized now that the link is sort of hard to see, so here it is again: http://www.hardballtimes.com/the-unionization-of-baseball/
  10. You think that will stop Cathal Kelly?
  11. Replace hip hop with sports and record deal with guaranteed contract and it still works!
  12. If nothing else, he can dance. I really like him.
  13. Everyone knows Arizona favors the *******s, gotta adjust for park effects.
  14. You're god damn right. I knew what this was going to be before I clicked haha.
  15. Great, now I need to put on a Bieber playlist when I get home.
  16. I just listen to the sounds of nature, best music there is. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v365/yukihime9/eleven-smug-grin.gif
  17. Fangraphs - Brett Lawrie’s Search for Past Success Moves to Chicago lol
  18. What would the reaction be if this was a player instead of JPR and a GM instead of Rogers?
  19. I liked Lawrie but cringed every time he came up to the plate. And damn, I think Professor Xavier walks more than Lawrie.
  20. Rogers doesn't know me. I missed my calling as Jays GM.
  21. I just assumed it was the size of his party sub.
  22. From what I've read (just to reiterate at point I made in the welcome threa, I'm still learning about sabermetrics) we should expect an uptick in velocity. My concern is that the extra reach has negative consequences for his command that seems to not be a strength. Is that where your comment about effectiveness stems from?
  23. Fair enough. I think (he didn't mention injury but it seemed like that's where the intent was) he was more getting at the idea that the probability of two 30+ pitchers on the Jays getting injured is lower than one 30+ pitcher getting injured (not necessarily true, but the idea is sound with some abstractions or additional information) and so you spread the risk, albeit at the cost of the spot in the rotation.
  24. The nice part about my join timing is that with this going on I'll have a better idea of how to weight what I'm reading.
