Remember, the Nats are in their last season of their contention window--there's a good chance Harper and Murphy leave for other markets after 2018, and the team's payroll is HEAVILY backloaded.

Anyone who doesn't support this needs their head checked--MLB is demanding this all around the league after so many injuries in the crowds. And this netting is common in Japan in their leagues. -
Dominic Smith is not quite MLB ready yet--they need veteran help until Smith is ready for an everyday role.

Boston Red Sox say hi. They have also done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING this offseason.. As for the Jays--you do realize it's still a month till pitchers and catchers report. Still lots of time to sign free agents.

Exactly. Some times, like the Tigers, as you've said, have learned this the hard way.. Miguel Cabrera, Jordan Zimmermann are humongous albatrosses on Detroit.. other notables include Albert Pujols of the Angels, who the Cardinals were smart not to extend him.. Jose Bautista of our Blue Jays(thank god we're out of that contract!), Kendrys Morales (sort of), Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval, and possibly David Price of the Red Sox.. and Chris Davis of the Orioles, an albatross of a contract that is going to lead to Machado heading elsewhere (Yankees?)..

Don't forget Biagini is still around as well. As for the rotation, we really do need a 5th starter type badly.. and there are plenty of those, as this free agent market is basically dead as no teams will pay up and/or are cutting payroll for tax purposes like the Dodgers or Yankees, or are tapped out (Red Sox), or are rebuilding (Detroit, Chicago, KC, Tampa..), combined with a lot of trading this winter, leading to the slowest free agent market in years. -
At the moment, yes. They are also getting Jankowski and Dickerson back in their OF in 2018 as well, as they're finally healthy. So Pirela might end up being a super-utility player. FYI, Jared Carkuff also is going to SD--35th round pick in 2016,

As for San Diego, they can afford to make this deal, as they still have Chase Headley, who they reacquired from the Yankees, Freddy Galvis at SS who they picked up from the Phillies, and Carlos Asauje at 2B, along with utility player Jose Pirela, who can play all over the diamond. They also have Cory Spangenberg, along with prospects Luis Urias, Allen Cordoba(who is ticketed for AA or AAA this year now that his rule 5 status is done), Javier Guerra and Fernando Tatis Jr. in the system. They could afford to make this deal.. plus they wanted to get his salary off the books long term (Headley is a free agent after 2018, and will go off San Diego's book after this coming season).

Edward Olivares, who's going to SD, is a OF prospect who ranked #18 on the Blue Jays prospects according to MLB.com. He had a strong year in Lansing with decent power and speed, but doesn't project as a major piece long term..

At $21M/year, that's fair for a 1B with consistent 20+HR power and decent walk rates, and a gold glove.. of course, not many teams really need a 1B outside of SD and KC, so his market's seriously limited..

That's got to be fake.. at $40M/year, that would put Boston so far over the tax, they'll get not just the 20% penalty on dollars over the luxury tax, but additional penalties, including losing their 1st rounder..

An update--apparently, Kemp's stay with the Dodgers will be brief. LAD is trying to flip him to save money and get well under the tax.

Braves will keep Kazmir and McCarthy most likely to plug into their rotation to give some of their young arms time to develop in Gwinnett or in the bullpen, Culberson will be a bench piece. As for the Dodgers, they had to get under the tax--as known, the team has debt service issues and under MLB rules, they must reduce their payroll or face significant penalties. Kemp will likely be a bench bat and backup LF/RF for the Dodgers, while they reduce their payroll to about $170M-180M and clear some of their overage of SPs... In addition, this makes the Dodgers one of the faves to sign Bryce Harper next offseason if the Nats cannot resign him by the end of this coming season.

Yes, but the Angels need to contend NOW--as Mike Trout is a free agent in 2020 and will not want to continue to play for a losing club like the Angels, as he's seen only 1 playoff series in his career (2014), and would like to play for an actual contender, especially if he has a shot to get a record contract by then.

Arte Moreno may have just spent on yet ANOTHER bad deal.. if Ohtani needs TJS, Angels might want to start entertaining offers on Trout--he's not going to want to keep playing for a losing club much longer, especially with his free agency only 3 years away.. where he could absolutely smash free agent contract records.

Jays aren't in payroll cutting or rebuilding mode like the Rays--Longoria is likely to be dealt soon, possibly this week, as the Rays want to get rid of his salary before he gets 10/5 rights and can block any trade out of Tampa, especially when the organization is trying to reduce a projected $98M+ payroll(according to Cot's) down to $60-70M (if not less). Moving Longoria's contract would help a lot--other options would be moving some of Odorizzi, Kiermaier, Ramos(unlikely), Colome, or even Brad Miller.. Gift Ngeope has options remaining and will likely be in Buffalo while Aledmys Diaz takes the backup 2B/SS job (as long as Travis/Tulo are healthy--though I expect the Jays to add another infielder as insurance). This Schimpf deal is more to likely plug the huge gaping hole at 3B in Tampa after Longoria is dealt in the coming days (Cardinals? Angels? Yankees? Giants?).. you have to wonder if Tampa is giving the same ultimatum to Longoria as Jeter did to Stanton in Miami before he was dealt to the Yankees.

You might get your wish--they have a lot of free agents in the next 2 years, with Pomeranz and Kimbrel being free agents in 2018, and Sale, HanRam, Bogaerts and Porcello the year after, and a depleted farm system that doesn't have anything projectable anytime soon. And the last thing the Sox need is to end up like Dombrowski's former club in Detroit--huge albatrosses and untradeable players that are in decline--Tigers could easily lose 100+ games next year with their current roster, and possibly more if Kinsler and Iglesias are moved. Dodgers aren't gonna bail the Red Sox out again like in 2012 if Dombrowski screws up, as LAD is trying to cut payroll itself due to luxury tax and debt service issues (Dodgers are deeply in debt from spending so much money the last few years and are risk of MLB penalties if they don't reduce the payroll and stop the bleeding of financial losses).

Rays are also in danger as well as that team continues to spin its wheels--will they commit to a full-blown rebuild or not? With Longoria's 10/5 rights coming and the team slashing payroll, it's inevitable they start a major sell-off, possibly this week in Orlando at the winter meetings. Really, at this point, it's a three-team race between Boston, NY and Toronto--but Toronto needs to be aggressive and add a big name or two.

Actually, unless they move salary(likely JBJ), they can't--team's at $201M and risk losing 10 spots in the draft if they gave the kind of contracts Martinez and Hosmer want (that would put them over the $40M+ overage that would cost Boston their 1st round pick)--they can't afford a repeat of the Sandoval/HanRam albatrosses of 2015. More likely they only sign one of them, and most likely JD Martinez, as he won't cost picks.. especially when there are other needs, especially with the bench(need a stopgap at 2B til June while Pedroia rehabs), 5th starter spot(E-Rod is out til May, Wright is facing a suspension as mentioned yesterday), and possibly the bullpen. And let's remember that the Sox farm right now is pretty crappy thanks to Devers and Benintendi graduating from prospect status--they can't afford to lose more picks.

Especially with the O's org. set to implode after 2018--Machado, Jones, Britton and Brach hit free agency, leaving a team with just Schoop, the Chris Davis albatross, and no pitching beyond Bundy and Gausman.. it's not going to be pretty. A decent owner would've put all 4 of those pending free agents on the block right now and rebuilt, especially with the state of the Orioles organization.
