I think the general consensus is that he's too smart for his own good and that being labeled as a genius manager earlier in his Tampa days (which he kind of was to be fair) got to his head.

Pitching Randy Rosario in the 8th inning, pinch hitting with Jason Heyward instead of Schwarber with the bases loaded, taking out Schwarber in favour of Terrance Gore after finally PH with him later in the game. Maddon hasn't been good at all.

He's fine but for me, for such an elite hitter that he was, he really seems to preach a completely different philosophy to hitting. I bet if he were up to bat right now he'd be looking to send the ball to the moon rather than "keeping it simple", but I guess he understands not everyone has his talents and they need to do other things to make up for it.
