That's true, but a deal like Pedroia's would really open up their wallets to bid in on someone like Garza or McCann this offseason, though I think keeping Salty wouldn't be too bad for them. They have a lot of versatility with Victorino in the OF so even if they don't resign Ellsburry, they have Victorino, Bradley Jr. and would Gomes be the other one? They could try to acquire another OF through trade though I'd be scared because Cherington doesn't really seem to trade well for needs.

It would suck hairy balls if Boston would signs Ellsburry at an AAV of less than $20MM per. Though Boston has a bit of leverage with the injury concerns, still though, he's younger and plays a more premium position, plus Boras.

Almost every single Marlins' trades over the past 10 years involves trading star players in exchange for prospects. FFS Jose Reyes and others for Marisnick, Nicolino, Henderson Alvarez and Hechevarria. -

Bautista injured his wrist last year and he made a pretty poor showing, it wasn't because of the Derby, he always takes swings like that. And again, they many not all be HR swings but players do BP every day, and the last round of BP is usually a HR contest, then you couple that with the swings the players might take in games and that in itself takes a toll on the players' wrist throughout their whole career, not just the one time that they appear in the HR Derby. -

Thanks for posting the details, and I forgot about Scutaro, just terrible moves all across the board. This team isn't winning because of Cherington, it's the foundation of the one left behind by Theo Epstein.

Stopped reading after that. It is common knowledge by everyone in baseball that the last swings of BP is players attempting to hit long balls. A wrist injury doesn't just happen the one time because the player "was swinging too hard" seeing as every BP before the game the players also attempt to hit bombs just for fun. I'm sure Stanton doesn't practice his bunting a few times before the game starts. -
Trades reliever for a good SS that had been a position lacking for them. Then lets go of said reliever. Trades Josh Reddick (forget who the other guy was). Trades a decent utility guy for a god damn manager (a manager!). Will probably lose Ellsburry or give in and pay him a huge deal. At this point the only good moves I can see is the massive salary dump to LAD and the Pedroia extension.

Technically Chapman has yet to fail as a starter because the Reds won't do it. He did start in Cuba and when representing Cuba so it maybe it's injury concerns because of the speed and delivery, I really don't know why he just wasn't given a shot from the beginning, or at least after giving him his first taste as a reliever and then converted him back, somewhat like a Sale situation.

I too hope he gets extended and a deal like that would be welcomed by many people on here I'm sure. It's true what you say, he hasn't had good enough years before this one with the Jays to justify him getting a bigger deal than that. Plus, hopefully AA pulls the "comfortable in Toronto (reverse St. Louis)" card to get him to stay at a decent price, much like the Escobar deal. At this point Melky really isn't looking like he was for the past few years be it for whatever reason (no roids, playing injured, whatever), so I wouldn't mind a Rasmus LF-Gose CF OF, range for days, and it would help getting the much better arm (and defender for that matter) in CF.

A guy his age doesn't just suddenly lose speed from one year to the other. Stealing bases isn't all about speed, it has a lot more to do with reading the pitcher's delivery, and getting good jumps. We can pretty much assume his head isn't fully in the game as the stats show. His defense hasn't seemed to take a hit according to some others that have seen him, and his speed/arm make up a lot of it.

I agree with this, people really underrate how good and valuable a player Rasmus is when he plays well, he tends to be very streaky but you take it when most of the time I would say he plays at a very good level. Yes Gose is young and controllable but it's no use switching him for Rasmus when Gose hasn't been proving that he can dominate AAA after repeating it (for whatever reason). Redmond is awful and shouldn't even be here if it weren't for injuries and lack of depth.

Except he is as fast as people make him out to be, and by people, we also mean scouts, and it's their job to properly evaluate how fast a player is.

My argument was never against tanking, I was responding to someone saying: "The more pain, the more gain. In all things in life." For example teams like Texas didn't put out awful ballclubs year-to-year while they developed their farm system, the same with the Cardinals. Really has nothing to do with what you're saying.

I think Rasmus just doesn't appear to hustle, he plays a very smooth looking game which looks effortless at times and this gives the impression that maybe he's not going all out on the field. I don't take much issue with Oliver, yes he asked for more or he would retire, love for the game yada yada, but still any player on his last year would probably also ask for more.

Why are Rasmus and Oliver problems? Rasmus is a red-neck but is basically harmless (only his dad is the crazy one) and Oliver is a vetrin. Plus, people love to see Lawrie's passion for the game, as do I. Fans appreciate players that go all out.

Lol no, most casual fans aren't into prospects or aware of farm systems, a truly awful team like the 'Stros can only lose fans playing like this, unless marketing has done a REALLY good job promoting the farm system.

Still, even during our rebuilding years when the future looked bright we never had teams as awful as the one the Astros throw out there every day, and I mean not even close.

To be fair a lot of kids in athletics are usually better built and usually taller for that matter, so maybe in sports 6' should be around average. I for one am 16 and 6'3 possibly 6'4.

And even though it was a SSS we saw what damage he could really do in his late 2011 stint with the club. The kid has crazy potential, it's disappointing to see him struggle but even when the bat isn't there he still provides good value with his glove at 3rd. You can't give up on a young player like him so early.
