There was a report stating as such earlier today. Went on to say league sources expected one team to blow them out of the water.

I get that Nox and you'll find no disagreements from me in that. The issue is that it isn't a ranking system, it's a way to minimize risks, understand aging curves and help predict run contributions. When you try to have player specific baseball discussions and the argument always comes back to Steamer projections (and it's only because it's listed on Fangraphs) it gets old very fast.

You keep saying this Hurl but let's not forget that the MLB went after Braun with the same tenacity which definitely did not help market the game. ARod is a narcissist which is why he is making this about himself against Selig.

Obviously it would have to be a larger deal but Odor would be the guy I'd target. Exactly the kind of player the Jays need in the system right now.

It's more saying that athletes peak earlier. When you've peaked you can only maintain that current play or decline. If you look at the wRC+ curve you'll see that the plateau extends to the age 25-26yo seasons as they always have.

That would be collectively bargained. And most that would be unnecessary to catch cheaters anyways.

I think the point would be to have a drug testing program that catches offences as they happen. The other thing they could do is shift the impetus of catching PED users from the league to teams. The league doesn't have the resources to actually catch all the cheaters and some will inevitably fall through the cracks. If teams were required to catch users and punished if they didn't the system would be much more effective. This would also allow the league to punish teams retroactively as they had the burden of catching the cheater and failed.

Hypothetical scenario that is discussed daily on baseball boards; Steamer projects 3 players; Player A at 4 WAR Player B at 3.7 WAR and Player C at 3.5 WAR it doesn't mean A>B>C it means that given the probabilities the best guess is A>B>C and there is a high probability the actual results will not reflect the projections or "rankings".

ARod says he didn't get caught, the MLB says he did. You can choose one side or the other but the arbitrator clearly felt it was enough to suspend ARod. If there was literally no evidence against ARod or proof that he didn't take PEDs the suspension wouldn't have stuck. The fact of the matter is ARod cheated, got caught and now has to deal with the consequences. It is ridiculous that a suspended player's salary doesn't count towards the luxury tax though. If teams were punished for steroid use instead of the players we would see PED use plummet but, that is never going to happen.

How did Braun try to obscure justice? In hindsight the blatant lies and public apology were disgusting but I thought he ended up working with MLB in order to get a lighter suspension...

It's all rumours though. We shouldn't really speculate too much. I;d love for ARod top bring this to federal court. I'm pretty sure he'd implicate himself in many federal crimes and end up in jail.

MLB has tasked itself with catching PED users, and the MLBPA has agreed to let them regulate banned substance use in the game. If it was collectively bargained you'd have a leg to stand on but that isn't the case.

Ya, exactly Zeros. It's becoming a ranking system for fans (because that's the kind of data they want for fantasy leagues and couch GMing) and it shouldn't be used that way.

I do JFaS and one of the big things I look at is PA and IP to do that. How many fans know that though? It got frustrating seasons ago and it's only getting worse. FWIW I think if you graphed your projections in terms of probabilities and people could see the distribution of your projection it would be a very interesting blog post.

I should back off a bit from that strong statement because I do think projections are useful. I hate the way they are listed on Fangraphs and I hate the way fans use them. Projection does not mean outcome. It's just a statistically probable scenario. I'd be far more interested in a projection range than a definite number.

My projections are worse. Haha. I don't blame people for trying but it's tiring how often these systems are quoted as gospel.

We'll never see the best projection systems because they are proprietary knowledge. I'd love to see the Rays projection system but, the ones that are publicly available are seriously lacking. I think the part that irks me the most is the definite number the system produces and fans quote. If they used a range or performance percentiles it would be a lot more useful.

The issue here is the lack of info that has been released, not the suspension.
